The biggest ever mass suicide in peacetime took place on November 18, 1978, when 913 members of the People's Time cult died after drinking Kool-Aid mixed with cyanide at Jonestown near Port Kaituma, Guyana. The leader of the cult, Jim Jones, had fled San Francisco together with 900 followers after accusation of financial irregularities. Jones was found to have died of a gunshot wound.
