Episode I can drag on for a bit. It gets tiresome looking at those Techs for the zillionth time. But plot-wise and world-wise I never saw it as generic. At least not compared to everything else. Though I know what you mean. I've become rather "eh" about a lot of games as of late. Anime for me is also completely dead. I lost total and all interest. At least tell me you still like THAT.
