I'm doing alright. Sharky as well. Excited for summer vacation
It would be weird if it said Pinkasaurus Rex without being pink though :P How are you?
Yeah, I remember reading somewhere one term relating to older men who slept with younger boys, and pederasty isn't normally how gay people operate. To be honest, I've had to arm myself with theological counterattacks, being bisexual and Christian and all. It isn't easy. I think I find the study (and others like it) interesting because we use social media so often, so unthinkingly at times, and it's fascinating uncovering all the things we glossed over. For my part, I'm not really a fan of selfies. Heck, I'm not a massive fan of any photo that has me in it.
Yeah, I've heard of the different greek terms for 'homosexual', which provides evidence for queer theology readings that contend that the Bible wasn't condemning the kind of relationships we see today. Also wow, have you read the article? Because the study was comparing selfies and magazine adverts, and showed that the selfies they examined were more stereotypical that the magazine adverts. Furthermore, they state that one possibility is the individuals exaggerating what they view in adverts! 40,000?! That is crazy. Good on you for doing it. For my part, I'm doing 8,000 words in over a week.
Ugh, yeah, I've had to deal with one or two translations. They're generally alright. So my word limit for my dissertation is 8,000 words, which Mr. Carny rues as his was a neat 10,000. Therefore, the upper word limit is 8,800. Beyond that, my markers are free to penalise me for going over, though it is at their discretion. I mean, having 8,850 isn't going to kill me, but 9,000... yeah. They're more liberal on minute limits for presentations, though, generally speaking. It is an interesting area. Just speaking anecdotally, I would probably hypothetise a mix of both. In magazine adverts, muscles are very much everywhere, as is the moody scowl which is apparently attractive in male modelling (seriously, when did that become a thing?). On the other hand, there may be a more marked rise in 'feminine' characteristics, such as the feminine touch. I can't say for sure though, and they might do gender-typical selfies to make a point, or to be ironic. Unfortunately, my 2016 study didn't touch upon possible intentions.
Your post in the dream thread tho
It isn't a case of 'if' I go over the word limit, but 'when'. Thankfully my course allows us a +/- 10% rule, which I almost always take right up to the limit. A good chunk of my time is referencing. We use Harvard, and I kid you not I have over 50 individual references. So far. Well the fascinating thing is this piece of current research (2016) acknowledges that they focused on what they term mainstream Instagram users. They said it'd be interesting to examine sexual minorities and their photo behaviour. Luckily in sociology we don't really quote from texts any earlier than 1950s, lest your credibility start slipping from outdated theories or texts. With queer theory, you're pretty much looking at about the 1980s onwards.
It's swung around to Instagram and Pinterest, funnily enough. I write... very verbosely, and very in-depth, so I'm honestly struggling to see how I'll fit the word count. I'm currently writing on gender-typical stereotyping in selfies. As in, females have a higher percentage of 'the feminine touch', 'imbalance' and 'pouting', while males have far higher levels of 'muscle presentation'. It's rather fascinating reading. I love working with really modern studies and topics. This research is from 2016, which is just so current, because social media has only really been academically research since at least the late 1990s, and definitely not in earnest until much more recently.
Seriously, you are one of the most nerdy, intellectual people I know, and it's fantastic. I mean, I love academics as well, but you're on another level. I'm currently writing my dissertation on gender role ideology within social media and it does make my head hurt sometimes.
Good! I did all the corrections that my supervisor instructed me to make, but I still need to add some stuff. But I'm almost there, overall!
