Well, DQs are all playable on the 3DS from IV to IX, and I to III have very well-made mobile remakes, so you can enjoy them all on handheld devices

Honestly, being a DQ fan in the West feels like being in a hostage situation sometimes.

Btw, got DQVIII day-one and I just remembered that there's one thing in particular that you might like about the series as a whole - the main religion in all the games is clearly and evidently inspired by Catholicism (to the point that there's only male priests, but also nuns and monks and whole hierarchies), and completely benevolent, to the point that you save at churches by confessing. Sure, there are some hints of corruption in the church in VIII, but overall this is a very positive - and very refreshing for Japanese media - take on a Catholicism-inspired religious organization.
