Judging by how people react to them, start with V or VIII. In V, you get some human party members, but most of the time you have to rely on recruitable monsters. It's interesting in that the story takes place over many years, your protagonist grows up, etc. and all the party members are basically your family and friends of the family. I am really pissed that I learned it early. Because it's shocking and great. It's really good.

I mean, that one thing, at least. I have no idea how it's been executed yet, but that one big game-changing detail I learned is good.

Also, fyi, I've just reached FFVII with my marathon, if you're interested.

I only know the starters, the legends, the Tapus, and Type: Null. Considering how all over the place all other Pokemon reveals have been (my youtube feed was especially terrible with this), I've managed to avoid a whole lot, which is great! Discovering all the new Pokemon is the biggest draw, so I can't wait for my next Pokemon adventure this Christmas!

...as long as Santa gets me the game, of course
