That's because it draws too much on MMOs. There are few NPCs, and your first two major characters contribute nothing to the overarching plot. Everything looks big, but empty. The prologue or tutorial or whatever is such an ass; you shouldn't straight up kill the player like that. Final Fantasy XII had some great things within it but you had to really stick it out and I'm not sure it's worth it.
Vaan is not even a character. Perhaps in Revenant Wings he takes on relevance, but in Final Fantasy XII he is an archetype with no place in the plot, nor the larger context. I think understanding how to write really helps us be right when it comes to these things.
It's all good though. It actually means I tend to get my presents early and then if I make it through the day without anything awful happening I relax and go out for dinner.
