    How equipment works is the same, but I'm well aware of how BD does jobs, I did play the demo after all. 4HoL is more like a revamped version of FFIII's Job system with a heavy emphasis on support units. I imagine most players give up on the game because most of the Physical based idiot-proof jobs unlock in the second half of the game and even then, they're hardly as OP as a Black Mage powered up by a Hero and Elementalist Jobs. It's a really interesting game, especially since it really deconstructs the whole "Chosen One" cliche in RPGs and also because your merry band of adventurers are all either incredibly self absorbed, or just completely inept often causing more harm than good. The second half of the game is basically a time travel story where the party is now fixing the circumstances of their worlds past which will inadvertently also undo all the terrible trout they've been doing as well. So I have a very good idea of what to expect from BD.

    Yeah, I'm happy to be working on it again. I think the nice thing about having a story bible is that working on it usually gets me motivated to work on my story proper. I may take a chapter out of Perfect Works and try to organize my SB like their book. Maybe build a dedicated Science and Magic section to detail a lot of the nuances of the cosmology. The SB gives the impression of a hard magic system, but it's really a soft one in the story proper. Probably due to the heavy magic users being the characters who have the power to break the established rules doesn't help...

    That sounds similar to 4 Heroes of Light's way of dealing with equipment vs. jobs. I really need to finish that game someday.

    Honestly, jumping back wasn't too hard for me, but I'll probably still do a real start over playthrough. I've actually been spending more time reading Perfect Works at the moment, which has got me working on my own story bible more. I find it hilarious that in both Gears and Saga, the Zohar is largely a device that allows people to control probability and rewrite reality, and in both settings, they use it to be a power generator instead. Tells me everything I need to know about how Takahashi views humanity.

    Still, the whole thing has me reworking on my own story's timeline and adding more details which is nice. I also feel like I have a better idea of how the second half of my story is going to work since it was always really vague in my head outside of the ending. I'm also thinking of restructuring my story a little bit. It was always split into arcs, but I'm re-evaluating how those arcs should be told when I get to the rewriting stage. There are a lot of chapters in this current draft that I feel I unveiled too soon in the story and I may instead re-arrange where they fall within the plot.

    That tends to happen. I've been chuckling about people whinging about Romancing SaGa 2's difficulty, and outside of the steep learning curve which can be fixed with a guide on how trout works, I never found the game's too difficult.

    I did pick up on my old playthrough of Xenogears, but I'm likely going to start over. I stopped in Kislev, but I really love the early game with Bart.

    We both appreciate Sakimoto, but between the two of us, I'd say you're the bigger fan. I appreciate his work, but wish his scores were less ambient. Hamazu's has the opposite issue of Mitsuda for me, in that I feel their battle themes are quite good, but the majority of their scores are kind of underwhelming for me. I tend to like quieter themes and Hamazu just doesn't do it for me.

    Not like this would be the first time. Though I'm pointing out more that what you enjoy in music is different than what I do. We have never seen eye to eye on Hamazu for instance, and we have differing opinions on Sakimoto as well.

    Uematsu is still credited as the main composer for the game, but apparently the videos we've seen tend to re-use old arrangements outside of the battle themes. They've used "Beyond the Wastelands" from Advent Children and the Distant World's version of "Opening ~ Bombing Mission". Course with his health issues, I could imagine someone else may have stepped in to work on the new arrangements for the game, but I also would imagine SE would have mentioned that. So it will have to be a wait and see, but so far, I feel the game is going for more of a Hollywood film route with the musical score. So while it will still be good, since VII's score was always one of the best aspects of the game, I feel like it's being produced in a way to not take away from what's going on the screen.

    I'm not going to pretend that I don't have a weird relationship with OST scores, so I'll wait and see about BD's music.

    I feel live orchestrated depends on the title and context. I've played games where it works and ones where it flopped for me due to a dissonance with the subject matter. I'm still not a fan of the orchestrated versions of some of VIIR's ost I've heard so far, especially since I feel it clashes with the setting and feels too Hollywood in its execution. Same with Mario Galaxy where the orchestrated music just never clicked with me. I still need to get around to Bravely Default, what little I remember is from the demo. I've been going back and forth on whether I like Death Stranding's OST. The main score that's done in-house is pretty good, but some of the band contributions are hit or miss. Low Roar features heavily in the game, but of like the fifteen or so tracks I've heard, I like maybe three of them. Their sound blends in too much with each other which makes discerning a lot of their tracks difficult cause you can't quite tell when one track ends and another begins.

    It's not a bad track, but of the versions I've heard, Cried's just feels off to me. Maybe because it sounds like a garage band doing a cover of it, which isn't helped by the more up-tempo second half, though I appreciate the accordion since it rarely gets much love as an instrument.

    I like Myth's version, but it lacks a certain flexibility the original has. I still enjoy both for different reasons, but the original will always be the definitive version for me.

    I still feel part of the issues is that Xenogears was one of his more overlooked OSTs at the time due to the game not being that popular. I've noticed more people have come around to it thanks in part to the game's cult status, but I've noticed his works in Xenosaga and Shadow Hearts also tend to be downplayed compared to the more commercial Chrono soundtracks. I think what really helps with Xenogears is that it really feels like Mitsuda coming into his own whereas with CT and Radical Dreamers, he was trying to prove himself to his superiors. Its the reason why I feel CC is a good composition because by now, he's not worrying as much about approval. I feel Mitsuda may feel this way because he seems to have a real soft spot for Xenogears considering how often he likes to do arrangements for it which makes me happy. I do agree with Resonant Arc that Xenogears did need a larger OST considering how large the game was. As for the OST versus some of his live arrangements, I feel it depends on the tracks. A Distant Promise works best for me as a music box theme, even though I do love the piano versions. Dance of Death is another track where I feel the muddy PS1 card works better for it than an orchestra. On the other hand, My Village is Number One and Lost...Screeching Shards are much better in the live versions. It took the Myth album to get me to like My Village is Number One. Windy Song is also an improvement with the live track. Still, I've yet to hear an official arrangement of my favorite track, Bonds of Sea and Fire, that hits me as strongly as the OST version.

    I've been avoiding that video for awhile simply because that man is literally a human trashcan, but it was hilariously accurate nonetheless.

    I've been listening to Xenogears OST a lot lately. I really do feel it doesn't get the credit it deserves of his work.

Frustrations of the writerly sort

So there's this thing I've been struggling for quite some time. I don't want to call it a "writer's block" because it kind of seems like an excuse for being lazy. And it usually doesn't last long. This is something that's been eating at me for a long time.

So this is kind of a general discussion, but the general rant I have is based on three popular 3DS RPGs: Bravely Default, Fire Emblem: Awakening, and Shin Megami Tensei IV. Sorry if this is chaotic, as I'm just writing this as it comes into my mind. Also, spoilers from the three games abound.
