Probably helps I never watched many of the Disney remakes so I don't have this issue. I like meta as well, but it's not really clever is the issue here. I mean RoE is clever because it plays on the fans knowledge and expectations to psych them out, this is a literal group of boogie men showing up to keep major plot points from being changed despite not really following the plot that well to begin with.

I mean Jessie and Wedge were both present for the Reactor 5 mission in the OG but get sidelined thanks to the Whispers in this one just so Cloud will go along the mission. Cloud tried to kill Reno at the church and they stopped him from doing that, but then also stopped the Shin-Ra from capturing Aerith and blocked off sections of the church forcing you to take a linear route out of it.

I feel my issue is that they are too blunt in their execution. They might as well as just be zombie looking people wearing FFVII Merch. The fact it's getting obvious Sephiroth is going to weaponize them for his own ends makes me cringe a bit for the future entries. Not to mention Aerith seems to know what they are up to as well. So my real concern is that this game is going to devolve into an acid trip so the party can finally get that Golden Ending where everyone lives, the bad guys are soundly defeated, and the planet will live on. I'm already waiting for time travel to enter the plot and that's going to be a pain. So ultimately, I see them as being stupid, and they are only going to lead to more stupid things. I can already see this is going to wind up being Sephy from the Compilation timeline using his powers to create an alternate timeline where he wins, and the planet in the form of the Whispers is trying to stop him, and then sends Aerith's spirit to possess her past self so she makes sure everything goes the way it's suppose to as well. I mean the real twist that is likely going to come out of the remake is that it won't be a remake but rather VII-2 when the dust clears.

I never felt the original was ever going to be redundant because of it. I mean I like the DS version of IV, but it will never replace the original 16-bit version for me either. Of anything, the changes simply showed how difficult it was to make any meaningful improvements on the original.

My issue so far with VIIR is that I could get behind this if it didn't have these silly ghosts interfering all the time. Like the game has already been making several subtle changes here and there but I'm pretty cool with most of them. Instead I feel these Whispers are going to wind up muddling the whole plot as it's becoming more and more apparent the cast is kind of breaking the fourth wall here. Basically it feels like it's turning into a DQV film kind of deal where I'm asking myself why they bothered, rather than an actual attempt to improve a good if awkward original. I'm probably just a little bitter tonight because the Whispers kind of ruined a moment from the original. They basically pulled a Genesis.

I'd say it would actually be building on the original if it wasn't being so, I don't know, smug about the whole thing. The Whispers reek of someone feeling smart about themselves while not being that smart about it. It would help if they were subtle but every time they appear, it's a big production.

I bet it was the KingK you were watching. He's got a strange opinion on the series and if he hates a mechanic, it ruins the whole experience for him. His Dark Souls videos are kind of in the same boat.

The Remake has been interesting, and there are certainly some good merits to it. I don't think it's going to usurp the original for me anytime soon. A lot of the good in the game is often attached to some of the negatives. Like I enjoy the better customization system, but I'm not a fan of the combat in general. Some of the character expansions are nice, but the game's pacing is off and too many sequences over stay their welcome. Some of the new story elements are good, but the Whispers feel too contrived and their inclusion always happening when things go off rails hurts the overall story. I also feel like Sephy is getting way too much screen time and I prefer how the original had him as this background entity. So it's been a real mixed bag.

I feel the OST is appropriate for the game, but I am not a big fan of the arrangements. The heavy orchestration and stripping away of the synth elements have downplayed the originals cyberpunk vibe. Midgar feels a bit off because of it.

Yeah, the bosses were not a high point in this entry originally. Except for Majora and the Undead King.

Damn straight, though I find it hilarious that I never used it properly in the boss fight for his dungeon. I just sniped the boss with arrows every time it passed by.

Oh believe me, I completely agree. I disliked the Zora form and the dungeons associated with mainly for the swimming being terrible in general.

Oh no, I believe that too, but if you haven't gotten to the point it's a habit, then I feel it gets weird for people until it does.

I imagine it would be weird to be on a schedule. I often feel most writers prefer to write when they feel like it or when inspiration hits, rather than being told they have to sit in front of a pad of paper or word document and told to they have to keep writing something until an hour or two has passed.

Yeah, I never needed a guide to find them. I think part of my issue was also the fact I was over halfway through the game before I discovered the Inverse Song of Time trick.

Part of your world

by Fynn on 06-06-2017 at 04:37 PM
So there's this nagging issue I've had for quite some time now. It's a pretty abstract issue but one I think is pretty interesting and perhaps even important to share nonetheless. For many reasons, it has only become more pronounced recently.

As some of you may know, I want to be a writer. I try to do as much writing as I can. I even do writing for a living, though as an SEO copywriter, it's not exactly that I have an opportunity to spread my creative wings as part of what keeps giving

On FFVII (part of my Fmarathon rant)

by Fynn on 11-23-2016 at 11:16 AM
Decided this is worthy of being a blog-post, since it turned out to be a much bigger rant than I expected and I'm not sure the marathon's audience is really there for that kind of stuff

Frustrations of the writerly sort

by Fynn on 07-01-2016 at 11:13 AM
So there's this thing I've been struggling for quite some time. I don't want to call it a "writer's block" because it kind of seems like an excuse for being lazy. And it usually doesn't last long. This is something that's been eating at me for a long time.

I just kinda feel that I can't write anymore.

I mean, I still write articles for the site sometimes and I write other texts at my work, but it seems like, creatively, I've dried up. I'll come up with ideas

On story expectations

by Fynn on 03-30-2016 at 11:57 AM
So this is kind of a general discussion, but the general rant I have is based on three popular 3DS RPGs: Bravely Default, Fire Emblem: Awakening, and Shin Megami Tensei IV. Sorry if this is chaotic, as I'm just writing this as it comes into my mind. Also, spoilers from the three games abound.

All of those games were very well received, though for different reasons. SMT is kind of here to serve as a neutral ground, as the evaluation of its story is pretty divided, whereas the consensus

Character Appreciation: Junpei Iori

by Fynn on 03-30-2016 at 10:37 AM
This is in no way an idea I stole from Pumpkin, no siree.

Junpei Iori is a character from the Persona franchise. He first appears in Persona 3 and all of its subsequent releases as a playable party member. He becomes a social link character as well in the female path of Persona 3 Portable, though he isn't date-able. He is also playable in
