Soc has us covering the zimbardo prison study, which we covered in psych as well. But it came up the uhh big fallout when some US soldiers were doing some not good things to POWs, and the soc teacher had us watch a video with some of the images. Ugh gosh it was so friggin awful

Perhaps it does. Maybe I overstate the power of the Catholic Church in Poland.

And Poland continues to surprise me.

    1) They're threatening my (not me specifically, but a general straight male viewer) masculinity by being men and practicing an alternate form of gender identity, taking on characteristics typical to women (even if they're otherwise perfectly "normal" or "straight-passing", having sex with men is enough to feminize), who are inferior, and this threatening my masculinity greatly,
Very true. Part of it is in the subversion of the male dominated norm in the act of gay sex. By giving up my male power and assuming the position of the 'woman' during intercourse, I'm inferior to the male hegemony.

This probably goes some way in the squickiness that some straight men exhibit when the topic of gay sex is touched. Even mentioning it can produce contorted faces and awkward coughing.

and 2) I'm a straight man who cannot contain my penis in my pants, send unwanted dick pics to random strange women and think a scantily clad woman is asking to be raped; naturally, a good looking guy like me would warrant attention from a gay guy and since he's still a guy, then of course he'd rape me.
Ah yes, the predatory gay. I think this is beginning to decline, but it is still apparent. More insidious is the notion of gay people and children. The Italy vote was telling because lawmakers were fine with civil unions, but were awfully nervous about any sort of gay adoption. The Catholic Church did much to remove that from the bill, I hear.

Still, the video overall was interesting because it actually paints Japan as a much less backwards country that actually used to be entirely open to homosexuality. So the misconceptions your Carny mentioned stem from a stereotype perpetuated in entertainment (kinda like we have butch and lipstick lesbians) and Japan's general culture of harmonizing rather than standing out, leading to little exposure to the LGBT community. So I think they still deserve more credit for accepting gay people pretty openly when they do appear, to the point that a gay character is always a staple of their entertainment.
There's hope for the future, at least. Certainly in collectivist societies, being different is treated as unusual and possibly deviant. It is getting better. Representation is almost there, but I do have concerns about what that representation is. I hope they move beyond stereotypes and effeminacy and T.V personalities, and more about just everyday gay people. Persona 4 disappointed me slightly in the lack of closure with Yosuke's latent homophobia. A late-game sequence with Yosuke apologising to Kanji for his previous mockery would have done that perfectly.

Watched your video. It was interesting, even if I kinda surmised much of what it said. The bit on entertainment though was very interesting, as was the notion that gay men are more accepted than lesbian women.

At least from my perspective, gay men are treated with more suspicion and prejudice. Lesbian women can be a 'turn on' for heteronormative men, while gay men would be 'sissies' or 'poofs'.

It might be different in Poland or other countries though.

Don't worry about it, I just feel like representing my own standpoint, that's all :P

The thing for me is that while yes, Ace Attorney and Danganronpa have similar concepts, they're still fundamentally completely different kinds of games. They share the mysteries-investigations-trials theme but that's about it, the setting and atmosphere are day and night. Granted, I feel that the context in which that theme appears in Danganronpa works very much in its favor since it's always personal, directly engaging and life-risking, but taking the elements on their own I feel Ace Attorney nails them better. At least at times, when it's trying =P

NGL, I had a bit of a malicious smile on my face reading 'my favorite VN so far', since I do place Danganronpa firmly and completely in the 'pure entertainment' category of VNs I've read, which doesn't come close in my list of favorites compared to the ones that actually affected me on a personal level. I'm really interested in seeing what you'll think of Umineko when you eventually read it ^^

Hmm, all I can really say is I enjoyed are cared for Phoenix and Edgey more than any of the Danganronpa characters.

Ah one more thing I felt the need to point out in the AA/DR comparison: Ace Attorney did a much better job of railroading the investigation and deduction process than Danganronpa did IMO. In every single case in Danganronpa there was at least some element I figured out way ahead of time yet it took the characters ages to do the same. (SPOILER)LEON, Chihiro's true sex, Hifumi walking out of the nurse room himself, Sakura creating the locked room herself, just to name a few off the top of my head. The progression in Ace Attorney was much neater and I can only think of a couple of examples across the whole series where it became a problem.

As I said before, I think that when Ace Attorney is at its best it's really good, and Danganronpa is in a rather constant state of pretty good.

Hmm I'm starting to think I might have to write an opinion post alongside the review just to be able to touch upon issues like these in more detail as well.

Part of your world

by Fynn on 06-06-2017 at 04:37 PM
So there's this nagging issue I've had for quite some time now. It's a pretty abstract issue but one I think is pretty interesting and perhaps even important to share nonetheless. For many reasons, it has only become more pronounced recently.

As some of you may know, I want to be a writer. I try to do as much writing as I can. I even do writing for a living, though as an SEO copywriter, it's not exactly that I have an opportunity to spread my creative wings as part of what keeps giving

On FFVII (part of my Fmarathon rant)

by Fynn on 11-23-2016 at 11:16 AM
Decided this is worthy of being a blog-post, since it turned out to be a much bigger rant than I expected and I'm not sure the marathon's audience is really there for that kind of stuff

Frustrations of the writerly sort

by Fynn on 07-01-2016 at 11:13 AM
So there's this thing I've been struggling for quite some time. I don't want to call it a "writer's block" because it kind of seems like an excuse for being lazy. And it usually doesn't last long. This is something that's been eating at me for a long time.

I just kinda feel that I can't write anymore.

I mean, I still write articles for the site sometimes and I write other texts at my work, but it seems like, creatively, I've dried up. I'll come up with ideas

On story expectations

by Fynn on 03-30-2016 at 11:57 AM
So this is kind of a general discussion, but the general rant I have is based on three popular 3DS RPGs: Bravely Default, Fire Emblem: Awakening, and Shin Megami Tensei IV. Sorry if this is chaotic, as I'm just writing this as it comes into my mind. Also, spoilers from the three games abound.

All of those games were very well received, though for different reasons. SMT is kind of here to serve as a neutral ground, as the evaluation of its story is pretty divided, whereas the consensus

Character Appreciation: Junpei Iori

by Fynn on 03-30-2016 at 10:37 AM
This is in no way an idea I stole from Pumpkin, no siree.

Junpei Iori is a character from the Persona franchise. He first appears in Persona 3 and all of its subsequent releases as a playable party member. He becomes a social link character as well in the female path of Persona 3 Portable, though he isn't date-able. He is also playable in
