The only problem I can imagine you having is finding out it's better than you remember from the 3D version. Or that it's worse.

I mean, it does sound like there is a bit more plot actually attached to them this time.

Origins forces you into Easy mode and only unlocks normal (original) mode after it's completed. Though I haven't seen much difference outside of the new sprint feature added into all of the PSX ports. I imagine that prices for items are cheaper in easy mode and enemies likely have higher enemy levels for faster player growth which is noticeable with a quick glance of both my save files. I think the Easy mode has higher stats for my team, more money and less time on the game clock compared to my current file on normal mode.

The DoS version tweaks the leveling system by removing the action-cancel bug from the original. Stats will no longer be lowered by doing certain actions, and hp increases are granted after certain times. The difficulty has also been tweaked to make the game easier. While several bugs were fixed, it was still possible to raise your HP by beating up your party. Obviously the Soul of Rebirth is also new.

The PSP version is a bit weird and is a combo of the two previous versions with a new graphical packaging. Script and gameplay of DoS but uses the superior audio from the Origins version. The game also adds a Defend command. Their is a new side quest with the Arcane Labyrinth which isn't too different in concept to the ones in FFI being a series of dungeons you can explore throughout the game. The biggest difference is that their is an actual story attached to them involving a guardian of the Ultimate Black Magic Destroy named Deumion. The spell is... not so great. Deals about 9999hp but kills everyone in your party except the caster who is left with 1hp and 0 mp. The story element sound interesting though.

In FFIX news, I'm heading to Buremecia and having a blast. IX really does just exude charm like no ones business. They really captured the feel of the older entries with the title and I'm surprised how much I do still love IX's gameplay. I mean I don't even notice the slowness anymore.

As for FFII, the old file I was at on Normal mode in Origins has me at the Jade Passage. I'm still grinding some magic levels though because I've never done it before and it would be interesting to see high level magic at play. Sadly, it does play like SaGa so far and offensive magic just can't seem to compete with good old fisticuffs. I also learned I need to hunt down an Iron Giant in Pandemonium because it's the only enemy I'm missing in the Collections. That and one treasure I missed in Pandemonium and I'll 100% it.

The second I saw it going up against FFX, I knew it was going down. I can't imagine a category on this forum it could have beaten it with. Even though this forum isn't even the biggest fans off FFX, I figured the better familiarity would sink it. Makes me sad because re-listening to the OST this evening, I forget how amazing Bloodborne's score really is.

Oof, it pains me to know Bloodborne is going to be taken out here.

As far as I know, the remakes all removed the penalty. Though you should still equip mages with robes over armor due to stat bonuses and better Magic Defense.

Yeah if your stats are good enough and you use buffs properly, he can't really touch you. That's kind of the main thing I've learned from Kawazu's design philosophy, "buffs make or break a game" with most of his works. It's actually amusing how trash tier a lot of offensive magic is in the SaGa series.

That's more or less the setup I like to run.

Lol, well as I mentioned in the main thread, a lot of the old school things were voted by a few people and you're the only one likely to vote for them. I have a strong notion where the voting is going to go with some of the entries, so this will likely not end the way these usually do. My category format has also thrown a wrench into some entries since I feel SMTIV would have likely survived if the category was anything not story related.

Most of the die hard Tactics fans are not active anymore and even then, it's up against a forum darling like IX which has always been a wild card entry in these types of events. I'm just sad because I'm pretty sure Bloodborne is going to lose its round. Not so much because its not liked on the forum, but because so few have played it compared to the entry it will be going up against. That's the other issue is that this list has some seriously niche titles on it, so it only takes a few people abstaining from voting to get some more interesting results.

Part of your world

by Fynn on 06-06-2017 at 04:37 PM
So there's this nagging issue I've had for quite some time now. It's a pretty abstract issue but one I think is pretty interesting and perhaps even important to share nonetheless. For many reasons, it has only become more pronounced recently.

As some of you may know, I want to be a writer. I try to do as much writing as I can. I even do writing for a living, though as an SEO copywriter, it's not exactly that I have an opportunity to spread my creative wings as part of what keeps giving

On FFVII (part of my Fmarathon rant)

by Fynn on 11-23-2016 at 11:16 AM
Decided this is worthy of being a blog-post, since it turned out to be a much bigger rant than I expected and I'm not sure the marathon's audience is really there for that kind of stuff

Frustrations of the writerly sort

by Fynn on 07-01-2016 at 11:13 AM
So there's this thing I've been struggling for quite some time. I don't want to call it a "writer's block" because it kind of seems like an excuse for being lazy. And it usually doesn't last long. This is something that's been eating at me for a long time.

I just kinda feel that I can't write anymore.

I mean, I still write articles for the site sometimes and I write other texts at my work, but it seems like, creatively, I've dried up. I'll come up with ideas

On story expectations

by Fynn on 03-30-2016 at 11:57 AM
So this is kind of a general discussion, but the general rant I have is based on three popular 3DS RPGs: Bravely Default, Fire Emblem: Awakening, and Shin Megami Tensei IV. Sorry if this is chaotic, as I'm just writing this as it comes into my mind. Also, spoilers from the three games abound.

All of those games were very well received, though for different reasons. SMT is kind of here to serve as a neutral ground, as the evaluation of its story is pretty divided, whereas the consensus

Character Appreciation: Junpei Iori

by Fynn on 03-30-2016 at 10:37 AM
This is in no way an idea I stole from Pumpkin, no siree.

Junpei Iori is a character from the Persona franchise. He first appears in Persona 3 and all of its subsequent releases as a playable party member. He becomes a social link character as well in the female path of Persona 3 Portable, though he isn't date-able. He is also playable in
