I still feel part of the issues is that Xenogears was one of his more overlooked OSTs at the time due to the game not being that popular. I've noticed more people have come around to it thanks in part to the game's cult status, but I've noticed his works in Xenosaga and Shadow Hearts also tend to be downplayed compared to the more commercial Chrono soundtracks. I think what really helps with Xenogears is that it really feels like Mitsuda coming into his own whereas with CT and Radical Dreamers, he was trying to prove himself to his superiors. Its the reason why I feel CC is a good composition because by now, he's not worrying as much about approval. I feel Mitsuda may feel this way because he seems to have a real soft spot for Xenogears considering how often he likes to do arrangements for it which makes me happy. I do agree with Resonant Arc that Xenogears did need a larger OST considering how large the game was. As for the OST versus some of his live arrangements, I feel it depends on the tracks. A Distant Promise works best for me as a music box theme, even though I do love the piano versions. Dance of Death is another track where I feel the muddy PS1 card works better for it than an orchestra. On the other hand, My Village is Number One and Lost...Screeching Shards are much better in the live versions. It took the Myth album to get me to like My Village is Number One. Windy Song is also an improvement with the live track. Still, I've yet to hear an official arrangement of my favorite track, Bonds of Sea and Fire, that hits me as strongly as the OST version.

I've been avoiding that video for awhile simply because that man is literally a human trashcan, but it was hilariously accurate nonetheless.

I've been listening to Xenogears OST a lot lately. I really do feel it doesn't get the credit it deserves of his work.

I may start it up after I finish Death Stranding, assuming I don't use Romancing SaGa 3 as a palette cleanser first. I feel it will be really inspiring.

Well I'm glad you're getting reacquainted with Bravely Default and having a lovely time. Once I finish Tactics Ogre, I may try to bum rushing my way to the ending of the 4 Heroes of Light since I'm pretty close to the end of the game. Then I'll check out Bravely Default.

I've honestly been thinking about restarting Xenogears to be honest. Though I've attempted to in the past, it's been a long time since I've done a complete playthrough and I feel I'm overdue.

Yeah, I haven't watched his retrospective on FFXII yet, but he paid it some heavy lip service for his Vagrant Story one. I'm debating about listing to his monstrous three part discussion on Xenogears. I liked his retrospective on it, but not sure if I want to listen to him and a few other guys try to dissect the plot. I'd rather read a transcript than listen to them.

I figure you would know this guy, especially since he seems to care a lot about the musical scores of games which reminded me of you.

Because it is the one bad track in a rather superb soundtrack that also happens to be the one track you'll hear the most. Granted, I don't hate it quite as much as FFX's battle theme but of RPGs with good OSTs, it is noticeably bad.

I've been listening to a YouTuber named Resonant Arc who is reviewing a bunch of old Square games, and he brought ot my attention the funniest, if also most appropriate description for the CC Battle theme Gale.

"This is the song you hear when you get molested by clowns in hell"

I'm now going to imagine Pennywise molesting me every time I hear this track now.

It looked very pretty in the documentary series, well until the actual war part started and we saw bodies and concentration camps. Hell they had interviews with a lot of people in the war, including the general who was convicted of war crimes a few years ago and drank poison at his sentencing. The documentary was done about six months after the peace accords done by the Clinton Administration, so there is a host of info that hadn't been discovered yet and I believe a few more years of skirmishes and fighting.

I feel the most amusing part was how every time you thought you knew the good guys, they turned around and did something reprehensible. Like the Croats plotting behind the Muslim Bosnian's to carve up their territory with their sworn enemy the Serbs, or how the Muslim Bosnian's started off protecting themselves from the aggressive Serbs only to turn around and want to keep the war going once they actually started winning with the backing of the Croats and UN. In fact it's amusing how often that part actually happened. Or how the Serbians, who kind of kickstarted the whole conflict under Milosevic, ultimately were the ones trying to stop the conflict in Bosnia. Yet their Serbian counterparts kept getting too greedy for land and purging the Muslim/Croat populations out. It was interesting to revisit the details after so long since I vaguely remember the war in my childhood.

As for Tactics Ogre, I've been reintroduced to why I hate aspects of the job systems once again. I finally unlocked the Fusiler Job and I'm trying to level him up along with the Princess Job, before tackling the very final dungeon. The fact equipment is based on levels is stupid in this game and simply punishes you for using new classes. I mean I got a gun expert class and he can't even use the most basic of guns until Lv. 15. What the smurf? They should have either dropped the level/equipment mechanic or simply allowed new jobs to start at a level equivalent to the party average. It's not like it would be broken out of the gate since you still wouldn't have any skills for the class or new recruit.

Part of your world

by Fynn on 06-06-2017 at 05:37 PM
So there's this nagging issue I've had for quite some time now. It's a pretty abstract issue but one I think is pretty interesting and perhaps even important to share nonetheless. For many reasons, it has only become more pronounced recently.

As some of you may know, I want to be a writer. I try to do as much writing as I can. I even do writing for a living, though as an SEO copywriter, it's not exactly that I have an opportunity to spread my creative wings as part of what keeps giving

On FFVII (part of my Fmarathon rant)

by Fynn on 11-23-2016 at 12:16 PM
Decided this is worthy of being a blog-post, since it turned out to be a much bigger rant than I expected and I'm not sure the marathon's audience is really there for that kind of stuff

Frustrations of the writerly sort

by Fynn on 07-01-2016 at 12:13 PM
So there's this thing I've been struggling for quite some time. I don't want to call it a "writer's block" because it kind of seems like an excuse for being lazy. And it usually doesn't last long. This is something that's been eating at me for a long time.

I just kinda feel that I can't write anymore.

I mean, I still write articles for the site sometimes and I write other texts at my work, but it seems like, creatively, I've dried up. I'll come up with ideas

On story expectations

by Fynn on 03-30-2016 at 12:57 PM
So this is kind of a general discussion, but the general rant I have is based on three popular 3DS RPGs: Bravely Default, Fire Emblem: Awakening, and Shin Megami Tensei IV. Sorry if this is chaotic, as I'm just writing this as it comes into my mind. Also, spoilers from the three games abound.

All of those games were very well received, though for different reasons. SMT is kind of here to serve as a neutral ground, as the evaluation of its story is pretty divided, whereas the consensus

Character Appreciation: Junpei Iori

by Fynn on 03-30-2016 at 11:37 AM
This is in no way an idea I stole from Pumpkin, no siree.

Junpei Iori is a character from the Persona franchise. He first appears in Persona 3 and all of its subsequent releases as a playable party member. He becomes a social link character as well in the female path of Persona 3 Portable, though he isn't date-able. He is also playable in
