Actually the interesting thing about MGSV is that it doesn't really do standard quests. Sometimes you have to collect documents or catch a rare animal, but due to the nature of the gameplay, it almost always boils down to infiltration missions. What helps the game is the Mother Base mechanic, where capturing enemy soldiers means that backtracking through smaller strongholds still retain value, but also the open ended nature on how you can complete missions helps give missions life as you can attempt it a few times and never get the same results usually as there are often multiple entrance ways or means of accomplishing your goals. Give the game excellent replay value, but that's almost a hallmark of the franchise really.

I would still say the best open world game I ever played was MGSV surprisingly enough. Probably cause it doesn't have the fetch quest nonsense the genre is rife with and the combat is actually really fun.

It's Zelda, it's usually good for a nice soundtrack. I'm hoping by the time I get around to Breath of the Wild, I'll be ready for another open world game. I get burnt out by them so quickly. Large part of why Fallout 4 is still unplayed on my backlog.

As a big Zelda fan, I'm a little jealous of you right now.

I generally prefer those type of scaling leveling systems. It's one of my favorite parts about Suikoden since it made keeping the large cast easily viable. Especially thankful after playing Arc II where the series could have made leveling a bit easier for new recruits.

The original Blue/Red had the same problem. Leveling in general was always a hurdle in this series for me.

    That's groovy.

My proudest achievement in the first chapter was figuring out a clever way to get a background info dump out to the reader by having the characters have a chat over breakfast while the radio in the background played out the info dump. I also abused the fact one of my characters is technically psychic to tell another character's backstory without a monologue. She simply starts "falling through his memories" and it's told in a disjointed way.

It's why my story is actually slowing down cause while it's a new draft, I'm revising parts I've already written. The worst part is realizing that I'm wasting my time and expanding when I really should be editing cause I feel the biggest problem with the new draft is the pacing is very sluggish. I took a part of the plot that was once about fifty pages and tripled it.

Part of your world

by Fynn on 06-06-2017 at 04:37 PM
So there's this nagging issue I've had for quite some time now. It's a pretty abstract issue but one I think is pretty interesting and perhaps even important to share nonetheless. For many reasons, it has only become more pronounced recently.

As some of you may know, I want to be a writer. I try to do as much writing as I can. I even do writing for a living, though as an SEO copywriter, it's not exactly that I have an opportunity to spread my creative wings as part of what keeps giving

On FFVII (part of my Fmarathon rant)

by Fynn on 11-23-2016 at 11:16 AM
Decided this is worthy of being a blog-post, since it turned out to be a much bigger rant than I expected and I'm not sure the marathon's audience is really there for that kind of stuff

Frustrations of the writerly sort

by Fynn on 07-01-2016 at 11:13 AM
So there's this thing I've been struggling for quite some time. I don't want to call it a "writer's block" because it kind of seems like an excuse for being lazy. And it usually doesn't last long. This is something that's been eating at me for a long time.

I just kinda feel that I can't write anymore.

I mean, I still write articles for the site sometimes and I write other texts at my work, but it seems like, creatively, I've dried up. I'll come up with ideas

On story expectations

by Fynn on 03-30-2016 at 11:57 AM
So this is kind of a general discussion, but the general rant I have is based on three popular 3DS RPGs: Bravely Default, Fire Emblem: Awakening, and Shin Megami Tensei IV. Sorry if this is chaotic, as I'm just writing this as it comes into my mind. Also, spoilers from the three games abound.

All of those games were very well received, though for different reasons. SMT is kind of here to serve as a neutral ground, as the evaluation of its story is pretty divided, whereas the consensus

Character Appreciation: Junpei Iori

by Fynn on 03-30-2016 at 10:37 AM
This is in no way an idea I stole from Pumpkin, no siree.

Junpei Iori is a character from the Persona franchise. He first appears in Persona 3 and all of its subsequent releases as a playable party member. He becomes a social link character as well in the female path of Persona 3 Portable, though he isn't date-able. He is also playable in
