I just can't deal with the puns. The accents are hit and miss. Ragnar's chapter with the heavy Scottish brogue is clever, but also makes it hard to sometimes understand what the objective is. Thankfully the game is so simple, cause a more complex narrative would have needed a pulled back approach. The weird Russian grammar structure in Alena's story is more annoying though, and I remember the heavy French accents in the Twins arc also made it a challenge to sometimes figure out what people wanted.

Now their translations in other games are nice, but as someone who grew up with the non-punny translations of old, it's hard to play through some of these entries. Icebolt just sounds cooler than Crackle.

I think the best thing about playing DQIII again on the SNES is that the translators chose the GBC translation over the newer ones. I get that the new translation is closer to the original, but I just prefer less puns and and spells being listed by the description of their sound effect over a more easily decipherable one.

I wouldn't say it's stifling, or I guess it would depend on the approach. I sometimes enjoy having a sense of canon or structure to a story. I think one of the reasons why all of my co-writing fanfic stories never go anywhere is because I get caught up into adhering to the established rules and setting. Most fanfic writers I know love to fly fast and loose with the setting and rules, but I tend to like to stay within the confines. I guess I enjoy the challenge of writing something that I feel could be mistaken for the actual author's work, which is my usual goal with such types of stories.

When I have my freedom to do as I wish, I feel the important thing is to maintain the themes and feel of the original. One of the comic projects I'm working on is an alternate Spider-Man character, but it's been fun planning out the story because the general mythology and themes of the Spiderverse give me enough leg room to be creative while still maintaining a story that feels familiar. It's interesting and probably where being very analytical about things comes in really handy.

On the other hand, I don't think I would be as bad about fanart or fan projects. I'd probably be pretty lenient unless they were seriously making money off it and even then, I'd probably let them continue as long as I saw some of the share.

I have a sneaking suspicion that I'm a bit of a control freak. If my work was to be adapted, I would want to be intimately involved, or in the case of working on something I finished that others would want to continue, I would probably end the story in a way that would give it no justifiable reason to be continued. That's something I've been noticing with my comic book project. I have a character I feel would be super amazing, but I've already planned for her story to have a specific end, so unless the book was cancelled before I got there, I can't really think of a way to continue her story without some ass pull plot nonsense.

Copyright and IP Laws are always fascinating. One of my favorite classes in college was Communication Law. Yeah, he likely deserves some better compensation, which is better than what you'll get in some other countries.

It's more from the guilt I felt when I went through my collection and had to climb over all four games to get to DQIV. I mean I'm dodging four potentially awesome games to replay one I felt mediocre about cause the mood struck me. Not to mention Romancing SaGa 2 is just begging me to play as well.

The two big ones are Raidiata Historia (original) and Bravely Default. Though you encouraged me to keep on Soul Hackers as well. I also have Persona Q and SMT: Apocalypse to start as well.

You say that, but you don't know which games I've been putting off. A few of them are games you've been bugging me to play for a few years now...

Well all this DQ talk has derailed my SD3 playthrough and instead I'm playing the SNES remake of DQIII. I've also been thinking about giving DQIV another go since it's handheld, but I'm also being painfully told how far behind my handheld gaming is.

Part of your world

by Fynn on 06-06-2017 at 05:37 PM
So there's this nagging issue I've had for quite some time now. It's a pretty abstract issue but one I think is pretty interesting and perhaps even important to share nonetheless. For many reasons, it has only become more pronounced recently.

As some of you may know, I want to be a writer. I try to do as much writing as I can. I even do writing for a living, though as an SEO copywriter, it's not exactly that I have an opportunity to spread my creative wings as part of what keeps giving

On FFVII (part of my Fmarathon rant)

by Fynn on 11-23-2016 at 12:16 PM
Decided this is worthy of being a blog-post, since it turned out to be a much bigger rant than I expected and I'm not sure the marathon's audience is really there for that kind of stuff

Frustrations of the writerly sort

by Fynn on 07-01-2016 at 12:13 PM
So there's this thing I've been struggling for quite some time. I don't want to call it a "writer's block" because it kind of seems like an excuse for being lazy. And it usually doesn't last long. This is something that's been eating at me for a long time.

I just kinda feel that I can't write anymore.

I mean, I still write articles for the site sometimes and I write other texts at my work, but it seems like, creatively, I've dried up. I'll come up with ideas

On story expectations

by Fynn on 03-30-2016 at 12:57 PM
So this is kind of a general discussion, but the general rant I have is based on three popular 3DS RPGs: Bravely Default, Fire Emblem: Awakening, and Shin Megami Tensei IV. Sorry if this is chaotic, as I'm just writing this as it comes into my mind. Also, spoilers from the three games abound.

All of those games were very well received, though for different reasons. SMT is kind of here to serve as a neutral ground, as the evaluation of its story is pretty divided, whereas the consensus

Character Appreciation: Junpei Iori

by Fynn on 03-30-2016 at 11:37 AM
This is in no way an idea I stole from Pumpkin, no siree.

Junpei Iori is a character from the Persona franchise. He first appears in Persona 3 and all of its subsequent releases as a playable party member. He becomes a social link character as well in the female path of Persona 3 Portable, though he isn't date-able. He is also playable in
