I hope she bit back. Hard.

My dad's cat had to get put to sleep because of cancer when he (the cat, not my dad) was about 8. My mom's cat got crushed by a fence at about the same age. Another cat my dad had died before it was 1 year old because it got some kind of virus. All the cats are from the same breeder. Including two of the cats I have now. (They are all British Shorthairs. A friend of mine gave me one of his American Persian kittens when my sister was hospitalized)

That tale went in two directions.

Here's his sister. And that's her leg being bitten. There's no incest or anything else offensive going on here (unless you are offended by violence in which case you should look away)

12 is a good age. Especially for a cat that is outdoors a lot. I've had one put to sleep at 9. One at 17 and one died at 16 the day before I was going to put her to sleep. Mr. Orange is only about 6, but I'll have to be putting him to sleep in a few days because he has feline leukemia and is now getting pretty bad.

Karma isn't out to get you. It just is. Caramel, on the other hand, is always out to get you.
