There is no such thing out of respect out of fear. You might not bother the person, but you don't respect the person. And of course people don't come to you for help. You make friends with people that you like, or like similar things. You earn respect from them, by offering help when you find out they need it. Even if they don't take it, you'll earn respect. But when it comes down to it, thats why respect takes time.

Now, the real question is, are people too not serious for you to get close to them? Or, do you just put up way too much of an unbreakable wall, and write off people that could be great friends.

I'm going to be on the latter.

I know respect out of fear isn't the best thing on the world (although it is in some cases for people that don't know when to stop joking around) but it's the next best thing to respect. Some people are better off being random people that fear you and tell other non serious people to back away from you than being friends that'll just joke around with you all the time and don't know when to stop, as harsh as it sounds.

I actually don't have many friends in real life. The few friends I do have are serious enough people that try to get close to me and people that I knew from way back then. The few friendships that I make end up lasting a long time though so it works out in the end.

As for getting respect, being nice to people and trying to help them out doesn't work especially when they never ask for help or when they just stay in their group of friends and shun you all the time.

Yeah. Respecting you out of fear? That's not even remotely close to being a friend!!

Respect out of fear? What kind of friends do you have?!? I earn respect from my friends from my actions, and helping them when they need it.

There's nothing wrong with joking, in my opinion life is meant to be laughed at, isn't the person who has the most fun in life often the one who wins? And hell, I make fun of my family, and my beliefs often. Of course there's a line that shouldn't be crossed, but if you know how to dance on the edge of it, then hats off to you! And of course I don't want you to joke about my family, in front of my family, but you'd have to be an idiot to do that anyway xD

If you get too close to people who aren't that serious they'll joke around with you too much though. Especially when it comes to sensitive topics like your beliefs or your family. Even if they are a nice person it's better to have them respect you out of fear than out of friendship.
