Like i said before, the Witcher also gave me Vagrant Story vibes because of how important timing was in battle and the fact that you had to make everything for yourself. I mean, it was just potions, but then, potions are basically the biggest mechanic of this game.

While I'm a fan of Mario and Luigi (Bowser's Inside Story is one of my favorite games of all time), I think you should just play what you feel like. Gaming should never start feeling like a chore.

Heh, thanks. Figured it was time to change it.

I haven't played AC so maybe that's why, but the Bulgarian -inspired chants remind me a lot of The Beginning and the End which was ALSO inspired by Bulgarian folk music, so I guess that's why I made the connection. But yeah, I think I may enjoy folk influences in video game music more than I thought. It's kind of weird to me that they didn't go for Polish folk for the inspiration, but I guess Bulgaria is close enough in that it's Slavic, but it's still exotic to us. So I guess it might be a case of Keeping It Foreign

I remember the last game I played that really put a great emphasis on gear was Vagrant Story and that game was immensely satisfying to me. Granted, the fact that you had to make it all and then "train it" so to speak was a big part of that satisfaction, but from what you're saying I should enjoy the way Souls handles it a lot as well. I'm also glad the Witcher 2 has more emphasis on gear now, even if the more streamlined approach of 1 had its charm.

That sounds very involved. It's great when games try to be realistic when it comes to gear and stats instead of just making stuff better for you. I always appreciate a good balanced approach. I'm actually thinking of making a dexterity/evasion-based hitter like you mentioned, but mainly because I'm now playing the Witcher and Geralt is pretty much set as that from the getgo and is pretty dancey and acrobatic. But that might change for me by the time I get to the Soups series

As a side note, been listening to some of the Witcher 3 tracks and these two battle themes are giving me Xeno vibes, of all things

IS Gear important? I was kinda disappointed that it didn't matter too much in the Witcher, and you only got like, three armors and three of each sword in the game, but it made up for it by placing heavy emphasis on alchemy.

Over all the years I've been gaming, I've gotten used to dying.

I take it the gameplay stays relatively similar? Because I've had a really hard time adjusting from the Witcher 1 to 2. The first game kind of made me think of a Baldur's Gate/Vagrant story hybrid, in that you have the active pause thing and then have to point the enemy, and then you have to time your hits right to string combos and there's three styles that need to be changed around depending on the enemy. And then in 2 it's completely real time with one button press corresponding to one hit like in a regular action RPG but the enemy lock on doesn't lock on your camera and it's weird. Still good, but I'm dying a bit more so far. I can already feel I'm getting better though.

Hope you don't get disappointed with me

I'll try to get them once I have a bit more money then. And maybe by the time I reach Bloodborne it'll be ported to PC or I'll have a PS4.

I'm really happy things are finally looking up! Also happy about the Bloodborne thing - you're making me want to pick up the Souls series after I'm done with the Witcher. Judging by how well my monster machine of a PC is handling the Witcher games, I'm fairly confident I can run those well as well Is there a PC version of Bloodborbe? I know there is if the other games.

Can't wait for the articles as well! What have you been reading? I've recently started Norwegian Wood by Haruki Murakami.

(Side-note: the Witcher 2 has one of the best directed opening FMVs I've ever seen)

So ive finished the first Witcher this weekend and enjoyed it a lot. It did a pretty rarely seen thing where the penultimate chapter was kind of a breather just before the climax which I really think helped the pacing, ironically, as I didn't feel at all tired with the actiony climax, which I'm sure I would have been had it been just non-stop action. So now I'm playing 2 and it's very different but also very good so far, with even more nods to the books (to the point that I really don't get how these games were so well received when the story relies pretty heavily on the novels but what the hell).

Still, wrote less than I hoped to because of that. But I should have more opportunities this week since we're taking a long train ride for a wedding! And how are you? Had a nice weekend?

Still, pretty lame. Even Mario has a story from the getgo, however simple it is.

I have other things to catch up with...

by Wolf Kanno on 04-09-2025 at 07:53 AM
I know I already have a lot on my plate, but I do want to finish a few other things besides writing projects and my various marathons.

I like to do gunpla and other mecha themed model kits, and I still have six more I need to finish. I have the old MG line of Gundam Wing Endless Waltz models from back in the early 2000s and I still need to put together the Tallgeese III to complete the set. I also recently picked up the EW version of Gundam Epyon from the same series because GW was

Games tha are distracting me from playing other games...

by Wolf Kanno on 12-10-2023 at 06:09 AM
Since I'm doing a marathon, I thought it would be fun to list the games that are distracting me from actually finishing said marathon.

FFXV ~ MGS: Peace Walker and SaGa Scarlet Graces
FFXIII ~ Breath of Fire 1-3 and MechCommander Gold
XIII-2 ~ Romancing Saga Re:Universe and FF: Opera Omnia

Will update more in the future...

Projects!!!

by Wolf Kanno on 01-28-2021 at 07:40 AM
Oof, I've been a bit out of sorts with my mental health lately, and I think it's about time I do something about that. I've got a lot of balls in the air so to speak concerning projects I've been doing around the forum both past and present. So I'm thinking about tackling a few of them, but with how I've been feeling lately, I want some second opinions I guess. Of the projects I've abandoned, what should I work on next?

Here's where I'm at for the moment:

WK's Top 100 Lost but Not Forgotten : Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together

by Wolf Kanno on 05-24-2020 at 11:43 PM

I'm always split on these articles. So many of these games are great and I have retroactively said a few of them made the list, but occasionally something comes along that I really want to love but the game just won't let me. Tactics Ogre is in a weird place for me because the remake and the original are pretty different in some meaningful ways, so much of this review pertains to the remake due to having only played a little bit of the original.

WK's Top 100's Lost but Not Forgotten List: Silent Hill 3

by Wolf Kanno on 05-03-2020 at 01:37 AM
Is this honestly the first non-RPG on this list?

Well I fell into the Silent Hill series rather late. By the time I had played the series, the "glory years" were over and fans were knee deep in Konami trying to take the series in a different direction without Team Silent. I was a huge fan of the first two entries of the series, being instantly sucked into the second entry and surprised how much I really enjoyed the first one. So it came as a bit
