Figured as much since they do mention continents (even though they theoretically shouldn't know what a continent is ). I'm just a bit surprised it's all islands so far and the island I just reached is the smallest one yet.

Also, not sure how I feel about the world map. I mean, they were clearly going for this immersive, DQVIII-like feel, and it's very nice at first glance, but it really lacks that real-life scale and detail that VIII's had and you can clearly tell it wasn't designed Robb's that large originally. Plus, it's segmented, which kinda ruins the immersion further.

Yeah, I'll probably stick with the original idea then, but I think I'll give the protagonist Gladiator instead of Sage or Armamentalist, now that I think about it - if I can't keep the spells from the sage anyway, I don't think there's really any point, and the Gladiator should help elevate his power stats. Plus he'll have some nice speed thanks to the Pirate and Tamer, so I think it could be cool. I know a lot of people advise you to get dancer to level 5 for all of your physical characters, so I might just do that as well.

The way it used to work, according to what you said, is exactly how it worked in DQ VI and yes, it was broken there as well. So I'm actually kind of happy it's more balanced. We'll see if I lose my mind near the end because of those monsters, then XD

As for my progress, I just liberated the second island and am exploring the volcano in the present right now. It's all pretty fun so far, though I kinda expected the new areas that unlock to be a bit larger than just these tiny islands. But hey, I'll take what I can get.

Thanks for the article, by the way! I'll take a look later!

Well that's great to hear! Glad you got that alignment fixed!

And yeah, I guess the stories are different enough. Especially since I feel that, while the premise is similar, the focus is totally different, so I'll still probably iron out some details before I start writing so it's something more unique.

As for the jobs, the problem with having people go the Luminary (that's what it's called now) route now is that you only keep abilities from basic classes you master. You have to stay a specific intermediate or advanced class in order to have access to its abilities.

But the monster classes are still there and I think they teach skills permanently, so I'll probably be playing around with those a lot.

I also heard that you can get Mervyn and Aisha either much earlier on or near the end of the game (without spoilers, thankfully) depending on what order you go with fragments, etc., and I'd really like to herb them as early as possible. If that's true, I'll probably be asking you for directions once I get close enough I'm guessing that's soon after unlocking Alltrades Abbey?

Also, took a look at the classes and I think I have the routes figured out, though the guys who will take on the hero class are abit more problematic, I think, since you don't have a set of intermediate classes that become hero, you just need to master three intermediate classes, regardless of what they are. So I wanted your advice! To the best of your ability, of course. And I'll be using the PS1 terms now since there aren't any solid guides with the 3DS translations yet., so I guess that's all the better for you!

So I figured Maribel will be a summoner - pretty much a no-brainer. Ruff will become a Godhand, I think, since I read he's pretty physical, and I think I'll do the same with Aishe, since I heard she's balanced but more suited to physical stuff.

Now, for the hero, I thought I could go the Pirate and Tamer for him, since no other advanced class uses these, and I think those two fit him quite well. But I'm on the fence when it comes to the third class. In DQVI I had a hero become a Hero by mastering the Sage, which was pretty cool since he had more spells. So I was thinking it would be cool if I also made this hero a sage. However, since both Pirate and Tamer seem to be more speed-oriented than power-oriented, I worry that a Hero resulting from Pirate/Tamer/Sage will be way too squishy. If that were the case, instead of sage, I could go for Armamentalist (or Ranger, as the original translation called it) or Gladiator (Dragoon). The Armamentalist is another class that does not directlty result in an advanced class, and I quite liked it in DQ VI, while the Gladiator would probably add some more physical punch to him, though I'm not sure it's that necressary.

As for Sir Mervyn, I wanted to make him a bit more of a magic-oriented hero, combining a Sage, Paladin, and Armamentalist. I think he'd be pretty balanced like that.

See, cause the idea I have kind of makes it a Devil Summoner fanfic, though a loose one as it's set in the US. Basically, I had an idea of two brothers running a detective agency but it's only a regular detective agency on the surface, as they're actually Devil Summoners and specialize in paranormal cases. So here I was, so excited with the idea, debating whether any of the brothers should have some supernatural abilities or if they should both be mundane, but then it hit me - "didn't I just plagiarize WK's idea?" So that was a bummer haha XD

Anyhoo, started DQ VII! I got to my first battle and honestly, I've gotten so used to Persona's introductions that the pacing here really doesn't bother me at all. I'm not one of those people who'll go "alright already, just get to the point! I want to play my game!" And I think it's really cool that the game takes its time to set things up. I really got a sense of what this island community is like, and honestly, it makes total sense why the hero and Kiefer would want to get off the island. Everyone's constantly nagging to them how they have to behave etc. And damn, what is the deal with Austen's (the heros's) parents? I mean, I get that they're good parents who love him and take care of him but I get the feeling they don't like him very much. His mother's constantly berating him while saying how great kids Kiefer and Maribel are (something I know all too well since childhood) and his dad's like "You were born on the day we had the greatest haul of our lifetime! You totally stole my thunder, you little trout. How smurfing dare you."

Didn't you have an idea for a story that involved devil summoners/occult detectives? Because I just remembered that bit and today I had an idea for a story involving that, but I'm not sure if my brain just plagiarised your idea or if they arę two different ideas both stemming from our love of SMT.

Well, six is my favorite so far. So I'm guessing this will end up very high on my list for the vocation system alone.

Inside, I am. I really wish I could be playing it right now. But I have things to occupy my mind with, at least

Until then, I still have The Sims, Icewind Dale II and the Witcher books to entertain me, haha

Pretty okay. I've decided I'll start it once my wife is done with Bravely Second, and she's pretty near the end, so it shouldn't take too long.

I have other things to catch up with...

by Wolf Kanno on 04-09-2025 at 07:53 AM
I know I already have a lot on my plate, but I do want to finish a few other things besides writing projects and my various marathons.

I like to do gunpla and other mecha themed model kits, and I still have six more I need to finish. I have the old MG line of Gundam Wing Endless Waltz models from back in the early 2000s and I still need to put together the Tallgeese III to complete the set. I also recently picked up the EW version of Gundam Epyon from the same series because GW was

Games tha are distracting me from playing other games...

by Wolf Kanno on 12-10-2023 at 06:09 AM
Since I'm doing a marathon, I thought it would be fun to list the games that are distracting me from actually finishing said marathon.

FFXV ~ MGS: Peace Walker and SaGa Scarlet Graces
FFXIII ~ Breath of Fire 1-3 and MechCommander Gold
XIII-2 ~ Romancing Saga Re:Universe and FF: Opera Omnia

Will update more in the future...

Projects!!!

by Wolf Kanno on 01-28-2021 at 07:40 AM
Oof, I've been a bit out of sorts with my mental health lately, and I think it's about time I do something about that. I've got a lot of balls in the air so to speak concerning projects I've been doing around the forum both past and present. So I'm thinking about tackling a few of them, but with how I've been feeling lately, I want some second opinions I guess. Of the projects I've abandoned, what should I work on next?

Here's where I'm at for the moment:

WK's Top 100 Lost but Not Forgotten : Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together

by Wolf Kanno on 05-24-2020 at 11:43 PM

I'm always split on these articles. So many of these games are great and I have retroactively said a few of them made the list, but occasionally something comes along that I really want to love but the game just won't let me. Tactics Ogre is in a weird place for me because the remake and the original are pretty different in some meaningful ways, so much of this review pertains to the remake due to having only played a little bit of the original.

WK's Top 100's Lost but Not Forgotten List: Silent Hill 3

by Wolf Kanno on 05-03-2020 at 01:37 AM
Is this honestly the first non-RPG on this list?

Well I fell into the Silent Hill series rather late. By the time I had played the series, the "glory years" were over and fans were knee deep in Konami trying to take the series in a different direction without Team Silent. I was a huge fan of the first two entries of the series, being instantly sucked into the second entry and surprised how much I really enjoyed the first one. So it came as a bit
