I think it also has to do with the fact that, for all its flaws, FFXIII had a pretty interesting concept for a world and a very cohesive atmosphere, structure, or theme even when it comes to world building. XIII-2 just feels different. It doesn't feel like it's expanding something that was present in XIII - it's kind of just hijacking it to become its own thing. XIII was super sci-fi with the fal'Cie and other stuff being important in shaping that world. Then XIII-2 introduces some weird Valhalla thing and shapeshifting clothes and the most out-of-place Moogles I've seen, and just overall feels like some weird anime fantasty thing rather than that sci-fi thing we had in XIII. And then Lighting Returns looks waaay different yet again. It's like there isn't a single creative vision bidning this trilogy, it just uses the same characters and world, vaguely.

Of course. No doubt about that.

I'm really hoping it succeeds on a larger scale, though, regardless of what our personal feelings on the details will be. Because I want more FFs that are actually ambitious (and you can't really deny XV's ambitious, because God damn is it trying to be something incredible) instead of the lazy "it prints money" attitude we've seen throughout the XIII trilogy.

Because damn, the gameplay refinements were not nearly enough to make XIII-2 palatable to me. I really wanted to play it, beat it, and try Lighting Returns because it actually looked interesting, but I can't. It's terrible and I can't.

I kind of see your point, and agree to a large degree. but there's just something about all the gameplay that makes me feel really hopeful. All those little touches with regard to characterization, the way the guys play off each other, really makes you think of real people which, as you know, was probably my biggest issue with FFX. We had forced drama and emotions that didn't feel genuine at all. Now I know this is way ahead of time as I still need to play the game, but from what we've seen, they really do look much more human than ever before. So I'm at least hoping not to be disappointed in that regard.

In general, i am optimistic. Part of me is cautiously optimistic, taking into account that Tabata looks like a very competent man but also remembering that many people who created X and XIII's story are involved in this story. Then again, another part of me is incredibly excited, seeing so many things reminding me of the games that I really loved. So I really want this to be good, and part of me just really believes it will be.

Yeah, I got pickier myself, I've noticed. But in my case, I'd have to get a new console anyway since I missed out on the last generation of consoles. And while I may still count on FFXV making its way to PC eventually, I really don't see it happening with P5. Needless to say, I'm super stoke for both.

For XV I think it's safe to assume it will be a much more enjoyable experience than XIII. Even if the story does turn out as bad as that mess, the gameplay looks to be much meatier with that huge world and loads of sidequests, which really does seem to harken back more to FFXII or XC, which is really my thing. So here's hoping it'll be all good, because if it is, it has the potential of being great. At worst, it'll be an okay game. Fun, at the very least, which XIII wasn't.

Yeah. I mean, it's good that the game was well-received enough with people giving it praise for the many things it did right, so it's good that they get money so that they can make more good games.

And I'm still hoping I'll get more into it later on, but truth be told, right now FFXV looks to have all the things I loved about OG Xenoblade, so I'm much more excited to play that now than to get back to XCX. That 50-minute gameplay demo made a huge impression on me, and I was super hyped for the game anyway. Too bad it doesn't look like I'll be getting a PS4 anytime soon...

Btw, forgot to mention this, but during my little vacation I got to play a bit of Xenoblade Chronicles X.

Honestly, I was a bit disappointed. I mean, you could chalk it up to me being unable to fully immerse myself in such a short time and exploration being very limited at first, but it also has this annoying flaw that wasn't really there in the original. You know how in the first game you just started off with Shulk who had a bunch of his own skills, and then progressively you got to unlock more skills, got to learn how other characters play as well as all the other elements of combat and exploration slowly opening up as you make your way through it? Well, in this game there's a whole crapload of stuff available to you from the getgo with a three-member party right from the start, and you learn all this stuff about BLADE, how all this stuff works, monsters, tyrants, etc. etc. There's just so many things and terms thrown at you and you have to do so much reading and it's still hard to wrap your head around it. The relative simplicity is just completely thrown out the window, really making for a muddled experience.

Also, I'm much less impressed with the silent protagonist than I expected I'd be and the world can't hold a candle to the uniqueness of OG Xenoblade. The menus are also even more confusing than before, and even though the TV I played on was huge and I have a new pair of glasses that make me see basically every particle in existence, the text was still too tiny to read comfortably. And the narrative is much less event-focused from the beginning, with characters constantly explaining things to you instead. That is, if they are not angsting about Earth getting destroyed all the time.

Overall, it just didn't manage to grab me as much as Xenoblade from the very beginning. This may change when I get the chance to play it a bit more, but it was still kinda sad because I really wanted to love this game.

I'm of the opinion that the vast majority of game would work better as handheld titles

But yeah, MegaTen games in particular really benefit from the portability. Had Nocturne originally been a portable title, I think I might have actually finished it. I mostly couldn't because it was time to leave my family home before being able to finish it.

Had a dream that they rereleased Nocturne and Raidou Kuzunoha on the 3DS. Sigh...

Thank for the note. I'm not active around these parts, though. Any other communities or sites you frequent?

Well that sounds really intriguing! Can't wait to read it once you have more!

I have other things to catch up with...

by Wolf Kanno on 04-09-2025 at 07:53 AM
I know I already have a lot on my plate, but I do want to finish a few other things besides writing projects and my various marathons.

I like to do gunpla and other mecha themed model kits, and I still have six more I need to finish. I have the old MG line of Gundam Wing Endless Waltz models from back in the early 2000s and I still need to put together the Tallgeese III to complete the set. I also recently picked up the EW version of Gundam Epyon from the same series because GW was

Games tha are distracting me from playing other games...

by Wolf Kanno on 12-10-2023 at 06:09 AM
Since I'm doing a marathon, I thought it would be fun to list the games that are distracting me from actually finishing said marathon.

FFXV ~ MGS: Peace Walker and SaGa Scarlet Graces
FFXIII ~ Breath of Fire 1-3 and MechCommander Gold
XIII-2 ~ Romancing Saga Re:Universe and FF: Opera Omnia

Will update more in the future...

Projects!!!

by Wolf Kanno on 01-28-2021 at 07:40 AM
Oof, I've been a bit out of sorts with my mental health lately, and I think it's about time I do something about that. I've got a lot of balls in the air so to speak concerning projects I've been doing around the forum both past and present. So I'm thinking about tackling a few of them, but with how I've been feeling lately, I want some second opinions I guess. Of the projects I've abandoned, what should I work on next?

Here's where I'm at for the moment:

WK's Top 100 Lost but Not Forgotten : Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together

by Wolf Kanno on 05-24-2020 at 11:43 PM

I'm always split on these articles. So many of these games are great and I have retroactively said a few of them made the list, but occasionally something comes along that I really want to love but the game just won't let me. Tactics Ogre is in a weird place for me because the remake and the original are pretty different in some meaningful ways, so much of this review pertains to the remake due to having only played a little bit of the original.

WK's Top 100's Lost but Not Forgotten List: Silent Hill 3

by Wolf Kanno on 05-03-2020 at 01:37 AM
Is this honestly the first non-RPG on this list?

Well I fell into the Silent Hill series rather late. By the time I had played the series, the "glory years" were over and fans were knee deep in Konami trying to take the series in a different direction without Team Silent. I was a huge fan of the first two entries of the series, being instantly sucked into the second entry and surprised how much I really enjoyed the first one. So it came as a bit
