Yeah, I get what you mean, and I was kind of expecting the same thing as you, but I was pleasantly surprised with this design because it was something new, unexpected, and I like the interpretation of underhanded tricks being the dark type staple. I was kinda worried it's just become a cat version of Houndoom, the hellhound. So to me, it's a nice surprise.

Btw, I'll be on vacation until the 16th, but I was thinking we could do another FF Talk after I get back? Psy mentioned doing stuff that's more general than just news, and I figured it was fun last time and there's tons of FF and SE-related stuff we could talk about anyway. What do you think?

yeah, I really don't get the hate the humanoid designs get. Especially compared to the fan evolutions people make before all the evolutions are officially revealed. Everyone seems to call them awesome, when I'm just baffled by how simple and uninspired they are. Usually the fan evos are just bigger, with maybe an additional beard or somethign, which is way off base, since even in gen 1 starter evolutions were not that simple.

I mean, look at these gen 6 fan evolutions. I mean, those are really nothing compared to Delphox, Greninja and Chesnaught, which I think all are awesome. And then I see things like these for the gen 7 starters and part of me kinda understands why they feel disappointed with the wrestling tiger because it's something completely different, but it's also just way more awesome than simply a bigger cat.

I mean, I guess Bulbasaur just got bigger with each evolution, but both Blastoise and Charizard look very different from their initial forms. I find it hilarious how people are complaining that Game Freak are unoriginal with Pokemon designs when the things they make up themselves are way less inspired.

Yeah, it was pretty cool! Again, a lot of fans took issue with her being so anthropomorphic, but I really thought the witch theme was a cool and original design choice.

I mean, I was surprised too, but there's just something about its design that just makes me love it!

Oh well. I'm fine being in the minority again. No one liked Emboar either, but he's still my fav starter to date.

Oh, it's definitely a nerdy con. I might check it out someday, though, we'll see.

And yeah, there was a scene he thought was a rape scene which traumatized him as a kid, so the lines uttered by the final boss during the final battle are taken from there.

Also, having beaten Undertale, I'm thinking of getting back into the Mother series with the wife. I played the first two games back in the day but only got like halfway into Mother 3 despite it being far and away the best one. I guess it was also the most difficult.

Have you played the series? What I found most interesting about it is that Itoi, the creater, never did any other video game before or after, and in Japan he's a big name as an essayist, copywriter and storyteller (he even had a short story anthology published which contained both his stories and Murakami's). Hell, he even did some voice acting, playing the father in My Neighbor Totoro. Considering I am now working as a copywriter and have similar writing (and generally creative) aspirations, he's quickly become a role model for me. One analysis of his games I read in Polish is that while most games that try to be "artistic" take away the gameplay, basically reducing the game to walking around thoughtfully and stumbling into cutscenes, as if trying to wrestle the power from the gameplay side of things, the Mother series is an actual game to the core with gameplay elements that are incredibly well-integrated into the narrative, making it all the more powerful.

It's interesting to think about, anyway.

I have other things to catch up with...

by Wolf Kanno on 04-09-2025 at 07:53 AM
I know I already have a lot on my plate, but I do want to finish a few other things besides writing projects and my various marathons.

I like to do gunpla and other mecha themed model kits, and I still have six more I need to finish. I have the old MG line of Gundam Wing Endless Waltz models from back in the early 2000s and I still need to put together the Tallgeese III to complete the set. I also recently picked up the EW version of Gundam Epyon from the same series because GW was

Games tha are distracting me from playing other games...

by Wolf Kanno on 12-10-2023 at 06:09 AM
Since I'm doing a marathon, I thought it would be fun to list the games that are distracting me from actually finishing said marathon.

FFXV ~ MGS: Peace Walker and SaGa Scarlet Graces
FFXIII ~ Breath of Fire 1-3 and MechCommander Gold
XIII-2 ~ Romancing Saga Re:Universe and FF: Opera Omnia

Will update more in the future...

Projects!!!

by Wolf Kanno on 01-28-2021 at 07:40 AM
Oof, I've been a bit out of sorts with my mental health lately, and I think it's about time I do something about that. I've got a lot of balls in the air so to speak concerning projects I've been doing around the forum both past and present. So I'm thinking about tackling a few of them, but with how I've been feeling lately, I want some second opinions I guess. Of the projects I've abandoned, what should I work on next?

Here's where I'm at for the moment:

WK's Top 100 Lost but Not Forgotten : Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together

by Wolf Kanno on 05-24-2020 at 11:43 PM

I'm always split on these articles. So many of these games are great and I have retroactively said a few of them made the list, but occasionally something comes along that I really want to love but the game just won't let me. Tactics Ogre is in a weird place for me because the remake and the original are pretty different in some meaningful ways, so much of this review pertains to the remake due to having only played a little bit of the original.

WK's Top 100's Lost but Not Forgotten List: Silent Hill 3

by Wolf Kanno on 05-03-2020 at 01:37 AM
Is this honestly the first non-RPG on this list?

Well I fell into the Silent Hill series rather late. By the time I had played the series, the "glory years" were over and fans were knee deep in Konami trying to take the series in a different direction without Team Silent. I was a huge fan of the first two entries of the series, being instantly sucked into the second entry and surprised how much I really enjoyed the first one. So it came as a bit
