Hey, now that I think about it, The Witcher 3 is the After Years to the books’ FFIV lol. The story is new on the surface but basically just remixes a lot of events and plot points from the books, but the characters - both old and new - really make the story enjoyable, and it’s just fun to play. Granted, this game also has DLC where one is amazing for being wholly original while the other just goes all in on the fanservice for both the books and the first game, but if we count just The Wild Hunt, the similarity is uncanny

Exactly. I’d say a sequel doesn’t need to be necessary in order to be enjoyable. The cast carries TAY and I think that while the new story is a bit of a nostalgic retread, I still think it’s interesting. The Interlude is an example of a completely unnecessary addition that, conversely, does not spark joy

I agree. It’s far from perfect and overstays its welcome a bit, but I actually really like it. I think the fandom is really exaggerating by calling it terrible.

I find the trials interesting in hindsight, since it’s obviously what inspired the After Years both in terms of story and the challenge dungeons. A lot of the ideas in that game had there roots here.

Nah, I’m done with the emulators. I also want to do the new dungeon they added since I never finished it. The whole point of this marathon for me is doing the game with all the extras available. The extra dungeons have been a total blast so far.

On a slightly different note, now that I’m in IV’s new post-game, I’ve come to really appreciate Cid. He wasn’t anything special when he showed up in the main game but now, with Thor’s Hammer, he is an absolute beast. I think he’s got the biggest damage output of all the physical fighters (well, in this version. I still can’t get over how my Kain in DS with Break Damage Limit, Focus and darkness managed to deal several dozen thousand damage to Zeromus in one Jump). I’ve no choice but to stan.

Also, my wife is digging IV and it’s gotten her into an FF mood. Considering how much she loves Bravely Default and the job system, she’s really looking forward to playing V. Problem is, I have no clue which version to recommend to her. The main dilemma here stems from the fact that I definitely wanna play Advance this time, since I played Steam the last time. I could recommend her the Steam version since then we could play the games in tandem (since even with me playing TAY after IV, I really doubt she’ll be able to beat V before I reach it as it’s her first time), but I have reservations about that. On the one hand, it has the better music, but then there’s the UI bring really bad (I don’t even personally mind the sprites) since they’re made for mobile, and the fact that she prefers playing JRPGs on handhelds. I could have her play the GBA version and just play something else in the meantime, like finish DQXI or replay Chrono Trigger. But then I really wouldn’t want to interrupt my marathon. I could just not play games in the meantime and focus on reading and creativity and just wait until she finishes.

Idk in the end I guess I’ll just show her some footage for comparison so she can decide what she wants her first FFV experience to be

Very interesting! See, this type of stuff I like because it references stuff from a previous game and makes it part of the new game’s world, but it doesn’t use that opportunity to retcon those two separate games into one continuity

Is FFIV’s world somehow confirmed to be linked to FFII?

Also that’s funny because it makes him sound a lot like Palom, but then in the After Years, while still arrogant, I feel that Palom has kind of balanced himself out quite a bit. I think he’s actually one of my favorite characters in that game, story-wise

Yeah I’m starting to develop this head canon that Tellah used to be all sex drugs and rock and roll in his youth. Makes his disapproval of Anna eloping with Edward all the more ironic

Games tha are distracting me from playing other games...

by Wolf Kanno on 12-10-2023 at 06:09 AM
Since I'm doing a marathon, I thought it would be fun to list the games that are distracting me from actually finishing said marathon.

FFXV ~ MGS: Peace Walker and SaGa Scarlet Graces
FFXIII ~ Breath of Fire 1-3 and MechCommander Gold
XIII-2 ~ Romancing Saga Re:Universe and FF: Opera Omnia

Will update more in the future...

Projects!!!

by Wolf Kanno on 01-28-2021 at 07:40 AM
Oof, I've been a bit out of sorts with my mental health lately, and I think it's about time I do something about that. I've got a lot of balls in the air so to speak concerning projects I've been doing around the forum both past and present. So I'm thinking about tackling a few of them, but with how I've been feeling lately, I want some second opinions I guess. Of the projects I've abandoned, what should I work on next?

Here's where I'm at for the moment:

WK's Top 100 Lost but Not Forgotten : Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together

by Wolf Kanno on 05-24-2020 at 11:43 PM

I'm always split on these articles. So many of these games are great and I have retroactively said a few of them made the list, but occasionally something comes along that I really want to love but the game just won't let me. Tactics Ogre is in a weird place for me because the remake and the original are pretty different in some meaningful ways, so much of this review pertains to the remake due to having only played a little bit of the original.

WK's Top 100's Lost but Not Forgotten List: Silent Hill 3

by Wolf Kanno on 05-03-2020 at 01:37 AM
Is this honestly the first non-RPG on this list?

Well I fell into the Silent Hill series rather late. By the time I had played the series, the "glory years" were over and fans were knee deep in Konami trying to take the series in a different direction without Team Silent. I was a huge fan of the first two entries of the series, being instantly sucked into the second entry and surprised how much I really enjoyed the first one. So it came as a bit

WK's Top 100 Lost But Not Forgotten: SaGa Frontier 2

by Wolf Kanno on 04-05-2020 at 02:32 AM
I was having a serious reservation about whether I was going to add this to my Top 100 list or place it here. I decided it would go here for now, but part of me feels it could be like Demon's Souls and make the jump to My Top 100.

SaGa is a weird franchise. A JRPG series made for enthusiast who feel they've seen it all. From the Gameboy entries where you built a ragtag group filled with robots and monster to climb a tower/tree to visit
