Too bad that, likr most FFXV guest composers, he composed like three tracks - the rest are arrangements by some other guys

Listening to the XC2 soundtrack today and pieces like this are why I really miss Mitsuda and wish so much that he would compose more

I’m honestly surprised with how well-arranged this is, and I say that as someone who’s spent a considerable chunk of his life in a choir

Yes. I mean, movement wise they’re a bit harder to control than just going on foot and combat doesn’t feel as, idk, robust as ground comvat? (No secondary cooldpwns, for example), but then that’s made up for by the fuel management mechanic making an awesome comeback from Xenogears, though it doesn’t work exactly like it, it’s still making me think about managing my tobot’s energy a lot. Plus, the scale change is just amazing. The world looks way different from up high and moving around is much faster. It’s also easier to grind levels - I’m pretty sure exp depends only on level, but the monster’s overall difficulty depends not just on that, but also on what size you are in comparison. So I can beat enemies that are higher in level but much smaller and then my levels soar.

Overall though, it’s much like Xenogears in that Skell combat depends on the money you put into it rather than experience, though your character levels are still important as they determine which Skells you can ride. The one you get for free is level 20, then there’s a selection of level 30, 50, and 60 types in the post game. I’ve also only piloted a light type Skell so far, but there are also medium and heavy types, all with their advantages and disadvantages (medium is what I’ll ptobably be getting next).

There’s always tomorrow! At least you didn’t lose the whole weekend

Meanwhile, I have wrecked my Skell once. But it’s all good because I just need one more level to buy a new Skell that will be much better than the last one!

I did get some done actually. Not a lot, in fact it was very little, but it was something!

Yeah, not feeling like it was pulled from the main game is important. Still, the Witcher kind of had it easy if only because they had a lot of lore to rely on to make things interesting, not to mention the main formula behind the entire franchise, both books and games, is retelling old folk tales from various parts of the world with varying degrees of post-modernism. And so, the first expansion reintroduces a much beloved character from the books and first game in a very sweet scenario, with its main plot being a retelling of a very unique Polish version of Faust known as Pan Twardowski (probably the only version in which the Faust character outwits the devil, either through his smarts or by having a wife that’s scarier than the devil), but it does it in such a way that is very much reflective of modern-day sensibilities and in general is just an incredibly poignant tale about the human condition - not to mention the fact that there are two endings and disputes about which one is good and which one is bad are still going on. And for all the shortcomings the second DLC has, it has the most delicious throwbacks to the books, including the single best character in the franchise who was believed to be dead and he’s just perfectly done in the game. But that’s just the tip of the iceberg, really. In general, neither of the two DLCs feel like they were cut out from the main game - they fit right in but they are their own contained stories.

My writing has slowed down a bit. I wanted to spend a larger part of the weekend writing, but instead I had to deal with a particularly severe migraine so I slept through most of it, to my frustration. I will make progress today, however. No more excuses. And at least I feel well rested for once.

Btw, the game kinda threw me off guard. There was one character that, from aesthetics alone, make me think he’s the “Uzuki” character of this game. But now that I’ve seen more of him, he does not fit that at all. However, I later learned another character I know can join the party later and not only is he very Japanese, he also uses a sword, so now I’m pretty sure it’s him, even if he lacks the trademark long hair.

I mean, even the trash missions are fine because you really get to familiarize yourself with this world in a relatively organic fashion. I’ve been discovering a lot and have covered a sizeabld chunk of the first three continents, though some of the exploration is blocked out so far and I think I need a Skell to really get around. Speaking of, I JUST GOT MY GIANT ROBOT HOLY CRAP!!!

I will definitely get the DLC when I get to that game. I like how big, substantial DLCs are becoming the norm now. Like in the Witcher 3, which is imo the gold standard of what DLC should be, has a bundle of free DLC which isn’t substantial and is mostly additional missions and aesthetic, but it’s free so that’s great. And then there’s substantial bits of DLC, one of which has one of the best stories I’ve ever played and the most fun bosses in the series, while in the latter they’ve added a whole new open world that is even better designed than in the former (and that second DLC alone won game of the year 2016, which is really saying a lot). So I do appreciate it when the devs ho out of the way to take all they learned from the base game and then make it even better in the DLC.

So I’m about halfway through XCX and I think my next game is going to be Bayonetta. Unless I get stuck in the abyss that is post-game content, of which I heard there is A LOT in this game.

Yeah, only this time they’re kind of two separate kinds of missions. Basically, all the trash quests are called Basic Missions while all the other ones are Normal Missions. There’s also an additional type - Affinity Missions, which are even more robust, fully voiced, and connected to the main story, but I treat them pretty much just like story missions since they’re mostly character development, and they’re pretty much there to accommodate to the non-linear story structure this game has compared to the first. Some of them are also mandatory to progress.

That’s good to hear. It’s always nice when a company goes out of its way to really provide substantial DLC.

They’re decent though. Not as incredible as the Witcher’s, but they’re also not the boring MMO variety for the most part, though there are a couple of those too

Games tha are distracting me from playing other games...

by Wolf Kanno on 12-10-2023 at 06:09 AM
Since I'm doing a marathon, I thought it would be fun to list the games that are distracting me from actually finishing said marathon.

FFXV ~ MGS: Peace Walker and SaGa Scarlet Graces
FFXIII ~ Breath of Fire 1-3 and MechCommander Gold
XIII-2 ~ Romancing Saga Re:Universe and FF: Opera Omnia

Will update more in the future...

Projects!!!

by Wolf Kanno on 01-28-2021 at 07:40 AM
Oof, I've been a bit out of sorts with my mental health lately, and I think it's about time I do something about that. I've got a lot of balls in the air so to speak concerning projects I've been doing around the forum both past and present. So I'm thinking about tackling a few of them, but with how I've been feeling lately, I want some second opinions I guess. Of the projects I've abandoned, what should I work on next?

Here's where I'm at for the moment:

WK's Top 100 Lost but Not Forgotten : Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together

by Wolf Kanno on 05-24-2020 at 11:43 PM

I'm always split on these articles. So many of these games are great and I have retroactively said a few of them made the list, but occasionally something comes along that I really want to love but the game just won't let me. Tactics Ogre is in a weird place for me because the remake and the original are pretty different in some meaningful ways, so much of this review pertains to the remake due to having only played a little bit of the original.

WK's Top 100's Lost but Not Forgotten List: Silent Hill 3

by Wolf Kanno on 05-03-2020 at 01:37 AM
Is this honestly the first non-RPG on this list?

Well I fell into the Silent Hill series rather late. By the time I had played the series, the "glory years" were over and fans were knee deep in Konami trying to take the series in a different direction without Team Silent. I was a huge fan of the first two entries of the series, being instantly sucked into the second entry and surprised how much I really enjoyed the first one. So it came as a bit

WK's Top 100 Lost But Not Forgotten: SaGa Frontier 2

by Wolf Kanno on 04-05-2020 at 02:32 AM
I was having a serious reservation about whether I was going to add this to my Top 100 list or place it here. I decided it would go here for now, but part of me feels it could be like Demon's Souls and make the jump to My Top 100.

SaGa is a weird franchise. A JRPG series made for enthusiast who feel they've seen it all. From the Gameboy entries where you built a ragtag group filled with robots and monster to climb a tower/tree to visit
