So instead of sitting down to write yesterday, I instead drew a group pic of the main cast for the first book. Not exactly progress, but it did get me inspired a little.

I still need to play that game. I do regret that I missed it back when it was new because everything I read about it really does make it sound like the actual first Bravely game, instead of BD being a simple spiritual predecessor. And this really only reinforces my opinion that BD is still very much an FF spin-off

Story Bibles for me are tricky, because I always feel that whenever I work one so etching meta, like a bible or outline, all my creative energy goes into that and there’s none left for the writing proper. I still need to figure out what the best method is for me.

Honestly, from what I read of 4HoL, the job system isn’t really like it in BD. The absolute best way I can describe it is honestly a refined FFV job system. It takes some cues from FFIII, namely in some of the jobs that return from there (like the Conjurer, Arcanist (aka Magus) and Spiritmaster (aka Devout), but with the multiclassing that FFV brought to the table, with a bit more freedom when it comes to choosing passive abilities. All the jobs are also very balanced, so even those that are usually throwaway are actually really useful. The red Mage comes to mind as very interesting as instead of Dualcasting being its main gimmick, this time it’s job that’s all about throwing a wrench into the Brave and Default mechanic. It’s honestly my favorite iteration of the system outside of the Tactics games.

Great to hear your stories are getting attention! I’ve been feeling fairly inspired myself lately, with my protagonist finally coming through to me in my head. I couldn’t write today because I had extra work, but I’ll be sure to write some tomorrow

I feel it’s always best to start over after a long break. It’s pretty hard to get back into it otherwise.

I’m reminded of one more thing I really like about Bravely Default. There are no equipment restrictions whatsoever - it’s just that jobs have proficiency in given types of weapons and armor. So you could theoretically switch to a completely different weapon for a while if it’s still the strongest after taking it account any proficiency penalties.

I think I’ve gotten better at game. Last time I played Bravely Default, I played on normal and it was pretty challenging overall. Now I’m playing in hard and things feel easy.

We do? I was always under the impression we both like Sakimoto, and I’m pretty sure you’ve been at least a little more appreciative of Hamauzu recently

I see you’re skeptical. How dare you challenge my authority on this matter

Agreed on FFVIIR. The arrangements are solid but by not going Dow the techno route the game loses a lot of its unique identity, imo. Granted, we’ve only seen promotional footage so far, so it might get turn out that the game proper has more electronic sounds in the end. I’m also curious as to what level of involvement - if any at all - Uematsu has on this soundtrack, since I haven’t read anything about it, which is weird as I feel SE would plaster it front and center (as Bravely Default II’s announcement had Revo front and center).

I feel the reason why Bravely Default work is that it’s a band - a smaller ensemble of instruments, the performers of which have worked together for years - rather than a full-blown symphonic orchestra. The latter does create the epic Hollywood blockbuster feel you mentioned that works for some things, but I feel that for a smaller scale, classic FF story this much more intimate yet very organic sounding instrumentation is just honest to God perfect

I guess I was just swayed by its Celtic charm. It helps that it sounds like it was really fun to perform for everyone involved.

Anyway, Bravely Default II has been announced and while that makes the fact I still don’t have a Switch all the more devastating, it is great to know that Revo is back as the composer. This is kinda why I think Mitsuda’s Xenogears OST would be better off performed by a live ensemble. When playing Bravely Default and Bravely Second back to back, the music downgrade is really grating. It’s not that Ryo is a bad composer - B2nd still has a very solid JRPG soundtrack, but not only is Revo exceptionally skilled in writing this kind of music, I feel what really elevates Default’s soundtrack is that all of it is performed by a live ensemble. It really helps elevate many of the scenes and is a key factor in building atmosphere. But of course, that would be nothing if Revo’s compositions couldn’t be summed up as basically SNES FF music on steroids, since Ryo’s ost just sounds very... anime

I mean, that’s fair. For me, I just really like how the track turned out on it’s own, not necessarily as a representation of what the track should have been like.

Games tha are distracting me from playing other games...

by Wolf Kanno on 12-10-2023 at 06:09 AM
Since I'm doing a marathon, I thought it would be fun to list the games that are distracting me from actually finishing said marathon.

FFXV ~ MGS: Peace Walker and SaGa Scarlet Graces
FFXIII ~ Breath of Fire 1-3 and MechCommander Gold
XIII-2 ~ Romancing Saga Re:Universe and FF: Opera Omnia

Will update more in the future...

Projects!!!

by Wolf Kanno on 01-28-2021 at 07:40 AM
Oof, I've been a bit out of sorts with my mental health lately, and I think it's about time I do something about that. I've got a lot of balls in the air so to speak concerning projects I've been doing around the forum both past and present. So I'm thinking about tackling a few of them, but with how I've been feeling lately, I want some second opinions I guess. Of the projects I've abandoned, what should I work on next?

Here's where I'm at for the moment:

WK's Top 100 Lost but Not Forgotten : Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together

by Wolf Kanno on 05-24-2020 at 11:43 PM

I'm always split on these articles. So many of these games are great and I have retroactively said a few of them made the list, but occasionally something comes along that I really want to love but the game just won't let me. Tactics Ogre is in a weird place for me because the remake and the original are pretty different in some meaningful ways, so much of this review pertains to the remake due to having only played a little bit of the original.

WK's Top 100's Lost but Not Forgotten List: Silent Hill 3

by Wolf Kanno on 05-03-2020 at 01:37 AM
Is this honestly the first non-RPG on this list?

Well I fell into the Silent Hill series rather late. By the time I had played the series, the "glory years" were over and fans were knee deep in Konami trying to take the series in a different direction without Team Silent. I was a huge fan of the first two entries of the series, being instantly sucked into the second entry and surprised how much I really enjoyed the first one. So it came as a bit

WK's Top 100 Lost But Not Forgotten: SaGa Frontier 2

by Wolf Kanno on 04-05-2020 at 02:32 AM
I was having a serious reservation about whether I was going to add this to my Top 100 list or place it here. I decided it would go here for now, but part of me feels it could be like Demon's Souls and make the jump to My Top 100.

SaGa is a weird franchise. A JRPG series made for enthusiast who feel they've seen it all. From the Gameboy entries where you built a ragtag group filled with robots and monster to climb a tower/tree to visit
