I’ve never really bothered with filling out any bestiary in any of the games. Also, translation aside, how different is FFII PSX to DoS/PSP? I know they changed a lot in the first game by changing the magic system, but I’m not really sure how the gameplay has been altered. Though maybe that isn’t the right question to ask since I’m pretty certain FFII has been further rebalanced between DoS and PSP.

And yeah, IX definitely is all that. One of the reasons I really want to get the Steam version is the Moguri Mod, which from the looks of it really brings IX’s art style to its full potential. That and it also speeds up battles a bit, for those who are bothered by the speed But yeah, honestly, I never thought it was that bad either. VII’s actually felt worse because all the ATB bars actually stopped whenever any animation played, no matter how small the spell. With IX at least it keeps going.

lol I can imagine. I’m sorry, I am just not familiar with its music at all

So remind me, does magic actually impact spellcasting in the remakes of II? Like is there any reason Maria shouldn’t wear heavy armor?

I am a bit worried if I’ll be able to beat the game if I give Richard the Blood Sword, but then I remembered I did just fine without one last time

So you asked me about FFII builds. In general I’m thinking of something similar to the last time, giving Firion a sword and shield and white magic, making him kind of a paladin who’ll be my main healer, Maria will get a vow and black magic, Guy either gets an axe and shield or two axes and very minimal white magic later on, while Leon will get either two swords of a shield. Any thoughts on that setup?

I mean, that’s fair. It did get a lot of hate at the start. But from what I’ve seen watching some videos lately, it looks like hardly anyone has anything bad to say about FFIX anymore. But then that’s probably because it didn’t get as many years of unstoppable praise like the other titles you mentioned did.

But even though I do like IX a lot, I think it’s ludicrous that it lost to FFT And in the story category, no less!

Oh yeah, I do agree it’s a much better game and I like it far more than Wind Waker - and the slow battles never bothered me either. I just mentioned it’s similar because I feel both are a bit unjustly revered nowadays.

lol that’s great. In general I’m happy people are actually getting involved in this marathon I fully expected this to be just me in the end.

As for IX, I’ve come to the conclusion that I feel about it similarly to how I feel about the Wind Waker. I do very much like it, but I can’t help but feel the fan base has kind of praised it too high. Like WW it used to be a black sheep but now seems to be revered by everyone and hardly anyone has anything bad to say about it, despite the game having its share of flaws.

by Wolf Kanno on 12-10-2023 at 06:09 AM
Since I'm doing a marathon, I thought it would be fun to list the games that are distracting me from actually finishing said marathon.

FFXV ~ MGS: Peace Walker and SaGa Scarlet Graces
FFXIII ~ Breath of Fire 1-3 and MechCommander Gold
XIII-2 ~ Romancing Saga Re:Universe and FF: Opera Omnia

Will update more in the future...

Projects!!!

by Wolf Kanno on 01-28-2021 at 07:40 AM
Oof, I've been a bit out of sorts with my mental health lately, and I think it's about time I do something about that. I've got a lot of balls in the air so to speak concerning projects I've been doing around the forum both past and present. So I'm thinking about tackling a few of them, but with how I've been feeling lately, I want some second opinions I guess. Of the projects I've abandoned, what should I work on next?

Here's where I'm at for the moment:

WK's Top 100 Lost but Not Forgotten : Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together

by Wolf Kanno on 05-24-2020 at 11:43 PM

I'm always split on these articles. So many of these games are great and I have retroactively said a few of them made the list, but occasionally something comes along that I really want to love but the game just won't let me. Tactics Ogre is in a weird place for me because the remake and the original are pretty different in some meaningful ways, so much of this review pertains to the remake due to having only played a little bit of the original.

WK's Top 100's Lost but Not Forgotten List: Silent Hill 3

by Wolf Kanno on 05-03-2020 at 01:37 AM
Is this honestly the first non-RPG on this list?

Well I fell into the Silent Hill series rather late. By the time I had played the series, the "glory years" were over and fans were knee deep in Konami trying to take the series in a different direction without Team Silent. I was a huge fan of the first two entries of the series, being instantly sucked into the second entry and surprised how much I really enjoyed the first one. So it came as a bit

WK's Top 100 Lost But Not Forgotten: SaGa Frontier 2

by Wolf Kanno on 04-05-2020 at 02:32 AM
I was having a serious reservation about whether I was going to add this to my Top 100 list or place it here. I decided it would go here for now, but part of me feels it could be like Demon's Souls and make the jump to My Top 100.

SaGa is a weird franchise. A JRPG series made for enthusiast who feel they've seen it all. From the Gameboy entries where you built a ragtag group filled with robots and monster to climb a tower/tree to visit
