Well it's had a rocky history dating all the way back to the 80s. Ys I and II are essentially two halves of one game, then there's Ys III: Wanderers of Ys, several games that are all Ys IV (it's a mess), and the elusive Ys V. Then the series died for 8 years until it eventually returned with Ys VI: Ark of Naphistim, as well as Ys Origins (a prequel, essentially Ys 0) and several updated remakes of the earlier games: Ys Chronicles (remake of I + II), Ys: The Oath in Felghana (remake of III) and Ys: Memories of Celceta (remake of IV). Ys Seven also came out around this time. Finally, there's been Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana, and later this year (and presumably localized next year) there will be Ys IX: Monstrum Nox. Hopefully Ys V will also have a remake localized at some point (it got one on the PS2), it's the one game in the series that never made it overseas, and I don't know much about it myself.

So given the number of remakes, there's really only 8 major games to play through, 7 if you discount Ys V for the time being.

Edit: Should also mention that most Ys games have been ported to Steam by now, making them pretty nicely accessible.

Well before that I do have some more Ys games - next up Ys: Memories of Celceta - on my list of games to play ^^ but I'll get to it eventually.

Yeah been thinking about getting into Dark Souls for a while, I'd probably enjoy it quite a bit, though I admittedly far prefer anime aesthetic with hype music (like this) over that dark and gritty medieval aesthetic Dark Souls has. It's like how games like Touhou would be entirely unplayable for me if they didn't have the visuals and music they have. That's what has been turning me off the series for now. But I still guess I owe it to myself to give it a chance at least.

Looking forward to more FFV from you ^^

Aah, blasts from the past I see ^^ I actually just booted up Ys: Oath of Felghana back up myself (I kinda started Chrono Trigger when I was at the final dungeon of that game) and promptly got reminded of what a brutal and unforgiving game it is. There's something to be said about games where you can go for 15-30 minutes of pure constant action gameplay and get several levelups without a save point in sight, they're exhilarating as all hell, but also do get frustrating for sure, ha.

Up to fixing the Masamune in my NG+ for now btw. Still a while before I can access them but I hear the three new vortex dungeons actually lead to an alternate final boss battle?

Sounds fun. What've you been playing lately?

Aqua hits the right balance in everything tbh. She is perfection.

The last bits of all the stories in this game are the best tbh. For such a dark game and for how short the world visits are, the game does kinda meander in super lighthearted moments

Yeah I heard the Ocean Palace version has far increased stats? Does that apply to all of its forms or just the shell?

Also while I first had some doubts, turns out I was powerful enough to take down Lavos with only Crono and Marle and got the developer room ending right away, yay \o/

Hmm I think I'd stopped by the store once yeah cause I'd heard the name Fritz before rescuing him. Did I miss something?

Games tha are distracting me from playing other games...

by Wolf Kanno on 12-10-2023 at 06:09 AM
Since I'm doing a marathon, I thought it would be fun to list the games that are distracting me from actually finishing said marathon.

FFXV ~ MGS: Peace Walker and SaGa Scarlet Graces
FFXIII ~ Breath of Fire 1-3 and MechCommander Gold
XIII-2 ~ Romancing Saga Re:Universe and FF: Opera Omnia

Will update more in the future...

Projects!!!

by Wolf Kanno on 01-28-2021 at 07:40 AM
Oof, I've been a bit out of sorts with my mental health lately, and I think it's about time I do something about that. I've got a lot of balls in the air so to speak concerning projects I've been doing around the forum both past and present. So I'm thinking about tackling a few of them, but with how I've been feeling lately, I want some second opinions I guess. Of the projects I've abandoned, what should I work on next?

Here's where I'm at for the moment:

WK's Top 100 Lost but Not Forgotten : Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together

by Wolf Kanno on 05-24-2020 at 11:43 PM

I'm always split on these articles. So many of these games are great and I have retroactively said a few of them made the list, but occasionally something comes along that I really want to love but the game just won't let me. Tactics Ogre is in a weird place for me because the remake and the original are pretty different in some meaningful ways, so much of this review pertains to the remake due to having only played a little bit of the original.

WK's Top 100's Lost but Not Forgotten List: Silent Hill 3

by Wolf Kanno on 05-03-2020 at 01:37 AM
Is this honestly the first non-RPG on this list?

Well I fell into the Silent Hill series rather late. By the time I had played the series, the "glory years" were over and fans were knee deep in Konami trying to take the series in a different direction without Team Silent. I was a huge fan of the first two entries of the series, being instantly sucked into the second entry and surprised how much I really enjoyed the first one. So it came as a bit

WK's Top 100 Lost But Not Forgotten: SaGa Frontier 2

by Wolf Kanno on 04-05-2020 at 02:32 AM
I was having a serious reservation about whether I was going to add this to my Top 100 list or place it here. I decided it would go here for now, but part of me feels it could be like Demon's Souls and make the jump to My Top 100.

SaGa is a weird franchise. A JRPG series made for enthusiast who feel they've seen it all. From the Gameboy entries where you built a ragtag group filled with robots and monster to climb a tower/tree to visit
