Torchic is amazing, though I am biased because I always pick the fire starter, no exceptions. I also really like the typing it gets later on, even if that bit is controversial because two subsequent fire starters have the exact same ruling. I honestly don’t mind but I can see why people are upset and I find it hilarious how now it looks like Scorbunny is also going to be fire/fighting.

Also, I think it’s worth mentioning that this is probably the most popular batch of starters aside from the original trio. Usually people who don’t like the design of the other Gen 3 mins like the starters. Not to mention they’re just some of the best starters around competitively.

    Which starter did you pick?

Well, GSC is available on the 3DS eshop, if you'd like to play the originals. Though I would personally recommend the remake, I figured this approach would work better for you. Plus, honestly, unlike Red/Blue/Yellow, the originals actually still really hold up, imo.

For the longest time gen 2 was my favorite and was kind of this standard to which I compared every other Pokemon game. It's great. I recommend it. Gens 5 and 7 are also fantastic, imo.

I think my favorite part is where all the tall grasses are with the rain. But you'll get to that later.\

If memory serves, you haven't really played the generation 2 games yet, right?

Well, there you go Hoenn is a cool region. I like how warm and brimming with life it feels.

Yeah, some games are worse for this than others. Though at least Pokémon RSE has those shortcuts you mentioned - the routes circle around each other so it’s very easy to backtrack and the whole region seems connected (though not as wwll as Johto). You’d be much worse off if this were Diamond/Pearl Platinum. That region is huge and you really need to work at unlocking the few shortcuts that there are. Most of them go through that huge ass mountain in the middle of it all, so you can’t even reliably avoid random battles.

Oh right you made a blog post about Setsuna didn't you.

Edit: Well just from reading that it sounds like a pretty interesting game ^^ might have to give it a whirl.

Currently a bit fascinated, I just finished my fourth Ys game, Memories of Celceta, and while it's on the surface very very similar to Seven and VIII, I didn't remotely enjoy it as much as those two. Goes to show how apparently any idea can be turned into a good one or a bad one depending on context and execution.

Ever had that experience yourself, of two games that by all rights *should* be similarly good having actually a huge gap in how good they actually are because something fundamental just doesn't sit right with one?

Ooh. Will give it a watch, thanks! And yeah, I agree. I cried almost as much when Silent Hills got canceled as I did at the end when Mary’s full letter was read.

My Top 100's Lost but Not Forgotten: Suikoden IV Part 2 ~ Suikoden Tactics

by Wolf Kanno on 06-17-2019 at 06:25 AM

So in my last blog, I talked about the black sheep numbered entry of the Suikoden franchise, Suikoden IV. Today, we're going to look at Rhapsodia, better known as Suikoden Tactics in the West. Tactics is a gaiden title that serves as both prequel/sequel side story to Suikoden IV. What makes it really standout is that the game is no longer a turn-based RPG about collecting 108 heroes, but instead a Tactical Turn Based RPG a la Final Fantasy Tactics, Fire

My Top 100"s Lost but Not Forgotten: Suikoden IV ~ Part 1

List, blah blah. Didn't make it, blah blah.

I feel I have a theme going here. Like the BoF1 entry, anyone who took a quick glance of my list will know I'm a pretty big Suikoden fan, you'll also notice I snubbed one of the main entries and most of the spin-off/gaiden games. I'll say right now, that I have to actually play Suikogaiden due to lacking the proper emulator, which is why

My Top 100's Lost but Not Forgotten: Breath of Fire

Blah blah blah, made a list, blah blah blah, this is for games that didn't make it.

Anyone who simply glances over my list will notice I have a strong affiliation with Capcom's classic and underrated RPG series Breath of Fire. They will also notice I left one entry out of the list, and while my BoFII entry hints as to some of the reasons, I figured I would lay it out here

My Top 100's Lost but not Forgotten: Dragon Quest VII

by Wolf Kanno on 10-26-2018 at 05:42 AM

I feel like the year 2001 was an odd year in gaming. One of the first time where you really felt like the end of an era and the beginning of a new one was coming. Sony was gearing up to release the successor to the smash hit PlayStation and if you looked around the gaming scene, it seemed like every company was jumping ship to get on board what the PS2 could do. Square had released their PS1 swan song FFIX even though they would still support the PS1 with

My Top 100's Lost but Not Forgotten: Arc the Lad II

You know the drill by now...

One of my all time favorite publishers in the 90s for video games was Working Designs. It was a company that actually tried to get a lot of cool JRPGs released in the West long before the actual JRPG boom in the last years of the decade. I've already spoken about their most high profile title they ever worked on, Lunar: The Silver Star Story,
