Oh yeah, I remember that. I’m always willing to listen!

And sorry for not replying so long. Been a bit busy.

I honestly think CoM is becoming more important with every subsequent entry. It’s almost like every new game takes one bit from its story and expands on it. I remember back in the day some people were like “I played II, so I got a summary of all the important stuff in CoM anyway.” In come Days, BBS, DDD, and even smurfing coded, and now I am pretty sure III does it again. It’s honestly hilarious how crucial this entry is.

But yeah, no one who actually cares about the plot says that. Though I do kinda see why people would want to believe that? Like, I get that people complain that crucial plot elements are in “spin-offs”, but Caddicarus summed it up nicely that there’s a very good reason for the distinction between the numbered games and the subtitled games - with the numbered games pretty much evolving the same gameplay, and the subtitked ones being more experimental in that regard. How many people would’ve completely noped out of this series had CoM been labeled II (which would suggest this is the direction the series is going) is probably hard to fathom.

Anyway, as you said yourself, they’re still just a minority, even if a vocal one. Stop Having Fun Guys exist in every fandom and since our been a big buildup for III, I’m just hoping they got active now and all this talk will subside a little bit now and we can all just.. enjoy the KHs we enjoy I guess. But yeah, if you’re really into this story, like I am, it’s really impossible to hate any entry really and consider it skippable. I’m in this for the long haul, for better or worse.

On the topic of shifting public opinions, a kind of similar thing happened in Pokémon where Gen 2 used to be the sacred cow of the franchise and now a lot of people criticize it for... basically being the first sequels the series ever had I guess? Tamashii Hiroka touches on this in her review of Gold and Silver (a cool watch that I recommend btw)

Yeah that part is genius. It’s really the reason why I’m much less annoyed by people who hate the battle system than by those who say the story is terrible because Sora “becomes an unkillable bastard”.

Like, that’s the entire point of this game???

In slightly more heartwarming news, I found some forum thread somewhere where someone was asking why CoM was hated. Cue tons of people saying they loved it, and those who didn’t saying they appreciated the experimentation, and even those that completely hated the gameplay loved the story

Yeah, I remember the boss rushes being intense, but I also remember the remake being way easier. But that may be because I was just older and more experience, idk. I also played it on standard.

Well, turns out the Sora save actually is an endgame save, so all I need to do now to get some cool new cards is finish the Riku save, so I did a little bit of that. I need to say this, though, the GBA graphics have aged like fine wine. Like holy crap, I forgot how great this game looks.

Btw have you heard of Project Destati? They’ve been doing some very ambitious KH rearrangements and I’ve been listening to their two albums non-stop recently. One’s called Light, the other is Darkness, and I know a third one titled Dawn is on its way. I highly recommend you listen to them if you haven’t already.

Still, all this talk about games aside, I’ve actually been reading a lot more recently, and it feels good. Finishing the second Earthsea book and I’m hooked. It’s actually got me in much more of a writing mood.

You’ve kind of made me want to dust off my copy of GBA CoM. The thing is I just noticed I have two save files on each character, none of which is of a finished game, but each guy has a save file that’s near the end. Don’t know, maybe I should rush them for the clear data, then replay I and then CoM from scratch properly, with all the extra cards

Yeah, and judging by what I know about III, I think it stays vague, though there is yet another function it plays apparently.

Honestly though? I don’t mind. I enjoy that there’s an element to this cosmology that is kind of beyond comprehension in universe. And even the people who want to use KH in some way shape or form don’t feally know but just have a strong hunch that X thing will work - but then it kinda does but not really? It’s great

The discussions are one of the best parts of being a KH fan though I don’t think I’ve mentioned how happy I am that you and I can talk at length about KH again yet

Honestly, I’ve always enjoyed Jesse McCartney’s performance as Roxas, but I have heard he’s better than ever in re:coded HD. He doesn’t really have spoken lines aside from some grunts in the game proper though

And yeah, totally agreed on all counts. I think there’s always the added stigma of “this is a spinoff” or “lol psp”, as if only big consoles can have good games on them. While it’s understandable how in the past people would just ignore these entries because they’re on different systems, now they’re all in one place and you’d think people would appreciate them more. But alas, the stigma remains.

Tbh though I still remember the days when discussions on this very forum took place that debated whether or not KHII really is an even better sequel because some people didn’t like some of the changes. Not a single person had a bad thing to say when BBS came out though. It just really goes to show how much sensibilities change - or how big a difference a FinalMix can make.

Games tha are distracting me from playing other games...

by Wolf Kanno on 12-10-2023 at 06:09 AM
Since I'm doing a marathon, I thought it would be fun to list the games that are distracting me from actually finishing said marathon.

FFXV ~ MGS: Peace Walker and SaGa Scarlet Graces
FFXIII ~ Breath of Fire 1-3 and MechCommander Gold
XIII-2 ~ Romancing Saga Re:Universe and FF: Opera Omnia

Will update more in the future...

Projects!!!

by Wolf Kanno on 01-28-2021 at 07:40 AM
Oof, I've been a bit out of sorts with my mental health lately, and I think it's about time I do something about that. I've got a lot of balls in the air so to speak concerning projects I've been doing around the forum both past and present. So I'm thinking about tackling a few of them, but with how I've been feeling lately, I want some second opinions I guess. Of the projects I've abandoned, what should I work on next?

Here's where I'm at for the moment:

WK's Top 100 Lost but Not Forgotten : Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together

by Wolf Kanno on 05-24-2020 at 11:43 PM

I'm always split on these articles. So many of these games are great and I have retroactively said a few of them made the list, but occasionally something comes along that I really want to love but the game just won't let me. Tactics Ogre is in a weird place for me because the remake and the original are pretty different in some meaningful ways, so much of this review pertains to the remake due to having only played a little bit of the original.

WK's Top 100's Lost but Not Forgotten List: Silent Hill 3

by Wolf Kanno on 05-03-2020 at 01:37 AM
Is this honestly the first non-RPG on this list?

Well I fell into the Silent Hill series rather late. By the time I had played the series, the "glory years" were over and fans were knee deep in Konami trying to take the series in a different direction without Team Silent. I was a huge fan of the first two entries of the series, being instantly sucked into the second entry and surprised how much I really enjoyed the first one. So it came as a bit

WK's Top 100 Lost But Not Forgotten: SaGa Frontier 2

by Wolf Kanno on 04-05-2020 at 02:32 AM
I was having a serious reservation about whether I was going to add this to my Top 100 list or place it here. I decided it would go here for now, but part of me feels it could be like Demon's Souls and make the jump to My Top 100.

SaGa is a weird franchise. A JRPG series made for enthusiast who feel they've seen it all. From the Gameboy entries where you built a ragtag group filled with robots and monster to climb a tower/tree to visit
