Well, he’s 87 now, so I imagine this might be his last DQ, especially since the new tracks for this game are apparently not too plentiful and a lot of tracks are reused from previous games, so I imagine he’s tired by now. I’ll miss his talent, but I’m pretty sure whoever succeeds him will have a much more ethical approach and maybe DQXII will finally have the in-game sound quality the series has always deserved.

Spears were great in that game, yeah. Not to mention one of the few reliable metal slime hunting methods.

By the way, as expected, someone’s already made a mod to put in the live orchestra version of the soundtrack of the game. Smurfing finally because Sugiyama’s primitive MIDI sounds clash heavily with the rest of the game. It’s even more damning that he put in an inferior version of the soundtrack into the game on purpose so he can get more money from CDs and concert tickets. Maximum scummy stuff.

Apparently some characters get access to dual wielding, yes. I either don’t have them yet or it’s a hidden skill on my MC’s skill tree. So far I am rocking greatswords and loving it

I mean, sure, but all these elements together make me think this is deliberate, especially with how they break the conventions set by III onwards. I’m expecting this to be deliberate, but we’ll see to what extent.

Other than that, game is very good so far and appears to be expanding on many of VIII’s ideas, though I also see the shortcomings of that approach. The overworked is gorgeous, but far more segmented and narrow, making it kind of feel like dungeons connecting towns instead of one huge world map. There’s still a ton of hidden stuff to find so it’s not all bad. The skill point system is better because you get hexes instead of a list this time so you have way more options in how you customize your character - but so far my MC has access to two weapon categories and his special luminary skill, with a swordmastery category apparently available once you get far enough with either weapon. So there’s less weapon variety, even if the skill system plays out better than before.

So I’ve noticed the DQ theme has the same intro as the Erdrick trilogy - not the one used from IV to VIII, it from IX to X, or even a new one altogether. The “intermezzo” segment that plays on the menu screen is also lifted from I, while all games since III used a different theme. And there’s a lot of “Erd” prefixes in words. Then there’s the logo that looks very reminiscent of DQI’s. I have a hunch this may suggest XI is connected to the Erdrick trilogy,

Perhaps. I still won’t complain though since I have enjoyed every single DQ game I’ve played immensely and it looks like XI will be great too

I mean, it is kind of a natural evolution of what we had in VIII and IX. And even in classic mode it’s never 1st person. But it’s like they added this other mode to make it feel like you’re playing an action RPG without making any other changes and it’s just awkward.

So I’ve played roughly 30 minutes of DQXI because that’s all the time I have for it. It’s very pretty. They added a free camera mode to the battles in which you can run around, which is pretty pointless because battles are still absolutely turn based. Thankfully it’s optional. One big change though is that you no longer issue commands to everyone at the start of their turn, but only when their turn actually comes up and then they do it immediately. I’m curious to see how this will affect battle strategy.

Have you had a chance to play it yet?

Games tha are distracting me from playing other games...

by Wolf Kanno on 12-10-2023 at 06:09 AM
Since I'm doing a marathon, I thought it would be fun to list the games that are distracting me from actually finishing said marathon.

FFXV ~ MGS: Peace Walker and SaGa Scarlet Graces
FFXIII ~ Breath of Fire 1-3 and MechCommander Gold
XIII-2 ~ Romancing Saga Re:Universe and FF: Opera Omnia

Will update more in the future...

Projects!!!

by Wolf Kanno on 01-28-2021 at 07:40 AM
Oof, I've been a bit out of sorts with my mental health lately, and I think it's about time I do something about that. I've got a lot of balls in the air so to speak concerning projects I've been doing around the forum both past and present. So I'm thinking about tackling a few of them, but with how I've been feeling lately, I want some second opinions I guess. Of the projects I've abandoned, what should I work on next?

Here's where I'm at for the moment:

WK's Top 100 Lost but Not Forgotten : Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together

by Wolf Kanno on 05-24-2020 at 11:43 PM

I'm always split on these articles. So many of these games are great and I have retroactively said a few of them made the list, but occasionally something comes along that I really want to love but the game just won't let me. Tactics Ogre is in a weird place for me because the remake and the original are pretty different in some meaningful ways, so much of this review pertains to the remake due to having only played a little bit of the original.

WK's Top 100's Lost but Not Forgotten List: Silent Hill 3

by Wolf Kanno on 05-03-2020 at 01:37 AM
Is this honestly the first non-RPG on this list?

Well I fell into the Silent Hill series rather late. By the time I had played the series, the "glory years" were over and fans were knee deep in Konami trying to take the series in a different direction without Team Silent. I was a huge fan of the first two entries of the series, being instantly sucked into the second entry and surprised how much I really enjoyed the first one. So it came as a bit

WK's Top 100 Lost But Not Forgotten: SaGa Frontier 2

by Wolf Kanno on 04-05-2020 at 02:32 AM
I was having a serious reservation about whether I was going to add this to my Top 100 list or place it here. I decided it would go here for now, but part of me feels it could be like Demon's Souls and make the jump to My Top 100.

SaGa is a weird franchise. A JRPG series made for enthusiast who feel they've seen it all. From the Gameboy entries where you built a ragtag group filled with robots and monster to climb a tower/tree to visit
