I mean, IX does indeed have Hot and Cold, but I still feel it’s kind of not structured like an actual world map. Each continent is treated like a separate “hub” that unlocks after specific story segments and overall to me it feels more like the stuff that comes later rather than the stuff that came before.

And yeah, I’m more and more excited for XVI for this reason, and it’s also the reason why I’ve decided I can’t ignore XIV anymore. Perhaps you’d like to hop on along with me once I reach it in the marathon?

I mean, the action thing is one thing, but just going back thinking about various FFs for this marathon, I’m once again surprised by how much I actually like FFVIII, and I think it just has a lot of scenes and locations that would translate to this new format pretty effortlessly. Like I honestly don’t think they would even need to split it this time, as I’m of the firm belief that FFVII is the last actual world map game and you can streamline a lot of FFVIII and IX without losing the exploration aspect.

Yeah, but I also think that it’s probably easier to pull off in a video game than in a movie. We had some semblance of that in FFX and it didn’t work too bad

So I can’t explain this, but I had this sudden, incredibly strong feeling that I would really, really love an FFVIIR-style FFVIII remake.

Yeah, I’m probably gonna do that if only because it’s gonna be totally different to any of my previous playthroughs. I just think it’s such a waste that I can’t use all the cool looking summoners, magi, and other jobs that I barely use but always look neat I think the main reason I’m not really comfortable experimenting so much in III is that I feel that investing in jobs I won’t use amounts to a sunk cost. Like I can experiment freely in V because I know that I’ll get some tangible progress from it that I can use even if I never go back to that job. But fine, I’ll try to shake up my party. I really did want to do that but the limited equipment options for most of the new jobs are really holding me back. I’ll go with Magic Knigh, Black Belt, Evoker, and the last one is gonna be either a white mage or a bard but I have no idea if I can even survive without a white mage for a while.

But yeah, this is exactly why I said I needed you I can’t experiment if I don’t know what the jobs really do, and the guides online are for the most part incredibly biased, with evokers and bards very often being dismissed as absolute trash. You can at least give me a solid rundown and a fair assessment

Sounds reasonable, and fairly similar to how it is in III DS. So did you do the classic 2 Ninjas 2 Sages setup or are other jobs viable?
  7. View Conversation
What level is reasonable for attempting the final dungeon, do you think?
  8. View Conversation
lol yeah no I won’t bother. It’s not that I’m looking for a challenge really, it’s more that I just want to do all the optional stuff. Stuff like that is where I draw the line. Which is also why I never did and don’t intend to ever farm for pink tails in FFIV
  9. View Conversation
    What does that mean?
  10. View Conversation
But yeah other than that and the jobs being slightly tweaked, this is largely the same game. It’s not as big a shock as if certainly experience had I played I or II on NES

So remind me because I’m having trouble finding a guide on this: what are the optional/missable bits in this game? My main goal in this marathon is to do all possible side content, and if I recall there was some in III, but I can’t remember

Games tha are distracting me from playing other games...

by Wolf Kanno on 12-10-2023 at 06:09 AM
Since I'm doing a marathon, I thought it would be fun to list the games that are distracting me from actually finishing said marathon.

FFXV ~ MGS: Peace Walker and SaGa Scarlet Graces
FFXIII ~ Breath of Fire 1-3 and MechCommander Gold
XIII-2 ~ Romancing Saga Re:Universe and FF: Opera Omnia

Will update more in the future...

Projects!!!

by Wolf Kanno on 01-28-2021 at 07:40 AM
Oof, I've been a bit out of sorts with my mental health lately, and I think it's about time I do something about that. I've got a lot of balls in the air so to speak concerning projects I've been doing around the forum both past and present. So I'm thinking about tackling a few of them, but with how I've been feeling lately, I want some second opinions I guess. Of the projects I've abandoned, what should I work on next?

Here's where I'm at for the moment:

WK's Top 100 Lost but Not Forgotten : Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together

by Wolf Kanno on 05-24-2020 at 11:43 PM

I'm always split on these articles. So many of these games are great and I have retroactively said a few of them made the list, but occasionally something comes along that I really want to love but the game just won't let me. Tactics Ogre is in a weird place for me because the remake and the original are pretty different in some meaningful ways, so much of this review pertains to the remake due to having only played a little bit of the original.

WK's Top 100's Lost but Not Forgotten List: Silent Hill 3

by Wolf Kanno on 05-03-2020 at 01:37 AM
Is this honestly the first non-RPG on this list?

Well I fell into the Silent Hill series rather late. By the time I had played the series, the "glory years" were over and fans were knee deep in Konami trying to take the series in a different direction without Team Silent. I was a huge fan of the first two entries of the series, being instantly sucked into the second entry and surprised how much I really enjoyed the first one. So it came as a bit

WK's Top 100 Lost But Not Forgotten: SaGa Frontier 2

by Wolf Kanno on 04-05-2020 at 02:32 AM
I was having a serious reservation about whether I was going to add this to my Top 100 list or place it here. I decided it would go here for now, but part of me feels it could be like Demon's Souls and make the jump to My Top 100.

SaGa is a weird franchise. A JRPG series made for enthusiast who feel they've seen it all. From the Gameboy entries where you built a ragtag group filled with robots and monster to climb a tower/tree to visit
