The books themselves were also pretty heavy on the deconstruction of fantasy tropes. Actually, Is probably recommend reading them before the games, since the games take place after the books. The first game is made pretty accessible to newcomers since they give Geralt amnesia, but then I heard that over the course of games 2 and 3 he gets his memories back, and then the Witcher 3 starts with a big exposition dump with the stuff from the books. They're still perfectly playable without reading the books, but there's a lot of cool little nods you won't notice otherwise

Might not be a bad idea. But the Witcher is pretty much it's own thing, while Dragon Age is kind of a direct spiritual successor to BG. And I know you're not much into traditional sword and sorcery - so the Witcher is kind of way more cynical about all that, while BG is pretty much meant to emulate a regular tabletop D&D campaign. Also, the Witcher's world is a bit more interesting since it borrows heavily from Slavic lore

As for the Devil Survivor thing, the first game still felt more cynical in a way. I just had a character die and it was all basically "oh no the monsters got him, what a shame". In the first game it was "holy trout those two guys were just normal people two days ago and now they murdered each other because people actually sometimes become super terrible in a crisis." It wasn't the best, but it was still more than what DS2 has.

But then, DS2 doesn't have Yuzu or that girl with the glasses, sooooo

Yeah. Will probably get it one day. Dark Souls as well. For now, though, I kinda need to focus on the ton of games I do have. Doesn't look like I'll be able to acquire any new games in the foreseeable future

Pretty okay. Been pretty consumed by the fanfic thing, to be honest haha. Glad I managed to post some of it already, hope I can get more up this week.

Other than that, been enjoying the Witcher a lot. I feel like it does a lot of things that you might like that just make the whole thing feel more organic. Like the whole thing that FFXV later had where you gain experience but only level up if you rest - this game does that too. Devil Survivor 2 is pretty decent, but the fanservice is heavy and we're starting to get to the annoying characters I feel, but overall, the gameplay remains fun. I also feel like this really isn't very SMT - the main antagonists aren't demons at all, it looks like, and even though there's death and destruction all around you, it really feels like there's nothing cynical about this game so far, which is kinda sad. However weak Devil Survivor was, you could still feel the underlying cynicism and that SMT spirit buried underneath, especially with all the nods to classic SMT. This one is fine, just pretty toothless all around.

Be careful though. People have pointed out to me that I have typos anyway -_- Really gotta edit it more thoroughly

Even if it didn't take little time, I still think the good outweighs the bad. Not only is writing by hand quick, it also makes it easier to tune out distractions since you're not using your computer for it. Also, when you do actually get to typing, you get to add corrections on the fly, so you're on your second draft already!

Games tha are distracting me from playing other games...

by Wolf Kanno on 12-10-2023 at 06:09 AM
Since I'm doing a marathon, I thought it would be fun to list the games that are distracting me from actually finishing said marathon.

FFXV ~ MGS: Peace Walker and SaGa Scarlet Graces
FFXIII ~ Breath of Fire 1-3 and MechCommander Gold
XIII-2 ~ Romancing Saga Re:Universe and FF: Opera Omnia

Will update more in the future...

Projects!!!

by Wolf Kanno on 01-28-2021 at 07:40 AM
Oof, I've been a bit out of sorts with my mental health lately, and I think it's about time I do something about that. I've got a lot of balls in the air so to speak concerning projects I've been doing around the forum both past and present. So I'm thinking about tackling a few of them, but with how I've been feeling lately, I want some second opinions I guess. Of the projects I've abandoned, what should I work on next?

Here's where I'm at for the moment:

WK's Top 100 Lost but Not Forgotten : Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together

by Wolf Kanno on 05-24-2020 at 11:43 PM

I'm always split on these articles. So many of these games are great and I have retroactively said a few of them made the list, but occasionally something comes along that I really want to love but the game just won't let me. Tactics Ogre is in a weird place for me because the remake and the original are pretty different in some meaningful ways, so much of this review pertains to the remake due to having only played a little bit of the original.

WK's Top 100's Lost but Not Forgotten List: Silent Hill 3

by Wolf Kanno on 05-03-2020 at 01:37 AM
Is this honestly the first non-RPG on this list?

Well I fell into the Silent Hill series rather late. By the time I had played the series, the "glory years" were over and fans were knee deep in Konami trying to take the series in a different direction without Team Silent. I was a huge fan of the first two entries of the series, being instantly sucked into the second entry and surprised how much I really enjoyed the first one. So it came as a bit

WK's Top 100 Lost But Not Forgotten: SaGa Frontier 2

by Wolf Kanno on 04-05-2020 at 02:32 AM
I was having a serious reservation about whether I was going to add this to my Top 100 list or place it here. I decided it would go here for now, but part of me feels it could be like Demon's Souls and make the jump to My Top 100.

SaGa is a weird franchise. A JRPG series made for enthusiast who feel they've seen it all. From the Gameboy entries where you built a ragtag group filled with robots and monster to climb a tower/tree to visit
