Outline for “Marked Women”
1.) The author wasn’t paying attention to conference, but instead, paying attention to the women’s appearance.
2.) She states that the first girl had a more conservative hair style.
3.) The second woman was “full of dignity and composure and was said to have a sense of style.
4.) Tannen stated that the third female had a more wild and flashy hairdo.
5.) Each woman had a unique way of wearing their make-up.

Summery
In this essay, Tannen goes to a conference and she noted the styles of the 3 women there. Woman one, she noted, was more conservative in her style of dress, hair, and make-up. Woman two had a style that was dignified, yet classy. The third lady had a wild and liberal style. Despite the 3 women having very different styles, the 4 men look pretty much the same. Tannen then goes on about how women are “marked” and no matter what she does, says, wears, etc., they are labeled. She then goes into the biological aspect of being “marked”, and says that since the males are different by having the Y chromosome, that they should be marked. Also, she explains how talking about gender issues marks you as a feminist, and talking about men is considered to be “male bashing”. In conclusion, she states that “there is no unmarked woman”
