I would brag about how well I know you, but you've told that "Ethiopian cuisine" joke pretty much every chance you've gotten for the past 4 or 5 years.

I knew you'd love my anti-jokes. There's just no way to resist that much awesome.

And now, Final fantasy party style!

At least you recognize you're basically Christian In Name Only. My dad calls himself Christian and seems to think worse of non-Christians in general... and I asked him straight-up if he believed in Jesus as the virgin birth/son of god thing and he said "No." The precise amount religion has taken up in his thought in the past 10 years has been devoted mostly with, along with me, trying to get out of going to church when we visit family.

I also love the "criticizing religion for bigotry is bigotry" arguments. Best example.

A lot of my step-dad's friends and the people in this area in general are real white trash.

The one time I did speak up at my step-mom's was during their ranting about illegal immigration, trying to point out that easier legal immigration would cut down on all of the concerns that can be readily controlled, and the counter-intuitive result of stronger borders keeping more illegal immigrants here. The friend's wife actually seemed to listen to some of it (or just didn't have a counter argument and just shut up).

Now, of course, they probably think I'm some sort of hippie communist (I know my step-mom knows I'm not, but I also know my dad told her I'm an atheist due to one joke she made about me not being struck by lightning if I entered a church). On a related note, I do sometimes wonder what some of my major Republican relatives would think of the fact that I'm an atheist.

I had to survive a weekend with some of my step-mom's friends (all wealthy, white conservatives). One proclaimed that criticism of the US for slavery is unjustified because other people had slaves. US slaves had it good, understand. I was biting my tongue throughout most of the evening. Later I had to hear my step-dad's friends talk about how the "damn blacks" run everything and if you even dare to say the word "nigger" you'll get hauled off to court (I'm waiting for my summons now). And then I have to semi-regularly hear from my step-dad himself about how Obama is a Muslim terrorist, and whatever latest talking point has been spouted by Sean Hannity.

So yes, I know your pain.

A high school friend posted a link encouraging bans on burqas in Western countries. We've had an interesting facebook debate on the subject which I thought about posting here, but I figured that our mutual disparagement of certain Islamic practices would get some people in a hissy fit.

Still it might be interesting. Or entertaining. Or both!

And I would say our debate was better than you and your dad's, but then you'd counter with something like "toddlers burping on each other would have more intellectual value than what comes out of my family's mouths" and then I'd just be letting you mock yourself (or your blood relations, anyway) instead of me mocking you. I can't have that.

To Health!

by Shlup on 01-16-2014 at 12:11 AM
I called my insurance company again today, but this time a different line because I needed to talk to a "dedicated Health Plan Advisor" for this issue. I have this brochure they sent me about tax credits for these new Obamaplans, and it said to call to determine my eligibility and receive more info.

On hold, the audio was a little different. There was even a message about these tax credits! It describes the tax credit, and then says "To determine eligibility--"

Get Obama on the Horn

by Shlup on 01-14-2014 at 03:35 AM
The audio that plays when I'm on hold with my insurance company loops every 45 seconds. I've heard it 260 times so far today. At around 230 you start to flinch every time the piano solo is about to start, like you're gonna get a smack.

261

The friendly voice that tells you all associates are busy assisting other callers cuts off the piano solo. When she's done, the song jumps in again, mid-note.

262

It's always the same segment of the song.

It Smells Like a 4th Grade Volcano in Here

by Shlup on 12-21-2013 at 09:30 PM
I made Bailey's hand print into Christmas ornaments for myself, my mom, and BJ's mom. I used a clay I made from flour and baking soda.

Apparently Mod Podge is pretty acidic 'cause now trout's all bubbly and it smells like vinegar. AHH!!

I already tried a sealing spray, but it just gets absorbed. Now that the brush-on stuff is made of extra fail, I'll try an acrylic spray.

My nose holes are upset with me. Bailey seems to be amused though.

Milk

by Shlup on 11-11-2013 at 05:58 AM
I really, really like having a baby. Being a mother was always my main goal in life, but I didn't think I'd like it this much. I don't even mind that my nipples are killing me right now because I just pumped more milk than I ever have in one sitting before--I feel accomplished. Today she stared lifting her legs and laying them to the side, so that she's almost laying on her right side, and it's like the biggest deal ever. I took a few dozen pictures of this major event. I'm going to call the president

Generic Update

by Shlup on 08-25-2012 at 03:17 AM
I just feel like slamming my forehead into my desk over and over. There's not really a good reason for it either; I think I'm having hormonal issues.

I should be in a good mood! I got three promotions at work in the last week or so. I was promoted from seasonal to regular, and then I got a trainer position that I had interviewed for. I had to turn that one down, though, because just a couple of days ago I was offered the position above trainer. They want you to work as a regular for
