Dad's trying to get re-elected into the municipal council. The candidates are given offices afterwards depending on how well they and their party fared and whether they got elected at all in the elections. If dad gets into the council and if he can choose where he wants to go, though, he'll probably take a seat in an office that deals with education and culture in our municipality.

Well, Finns like me don't actually have Democratic or Republican parties (instead we have three major parties as well as some smaller parties), but if symbolically I had to choose one of those two American parties, I'd most likely go with the Democrats.
