So the murder mystery RP started! If you feel like it or want to get your mind off of things, just hop on in Some people have already written some stuff, so getting in shouldn't be too scary anymore.

ANd yeah, if you want to, I'm always there to listen

When you put it that way, I understand. And I am really glad we have a variety of games to cater to people on different areas of that spectrum. But it seems like the "stupid plot, leave it out" camp is probably a vocal minority that nonetheless makes it seem like all games should have simple or non-existent plots to be enjoyable, while games that are more complete packages are mocked, which is stupid.

I'm actually having high hopes for FFXV for this reason. I have no idea what it'll turn out like yet, but it really seems like they're putting great effort into the storyline, making it mature and realistic, and I'm pretty confident it will be good, while the gameplay looks fun and, most importantly, palatable for the mainstream, so perhaps that can break some of that trend?

But how can you unwind without a story that grips you? That's just so weird. people read books to unwind. They can wrap their heads around plots that are much more complex than pretty much all (or at least like 90%) of games. It's so werid. I think it's a matter of attitude, trends, etc.

Yeah. I never really got that "story versus gameplay" conflict. I hate how people complain that (Japanese) video game stories are too complicated, when they aren't, and this is actually my idea of a whole package - nice, deep gameplay and an engaging story and characters.

I sometimes wonder if the general gaming community considers something else a good story. Take Child of Light, for example. It was a really cool game gameplay- and artstyle-wise, and the characters were endearing, if minimalistic, but the story really didn't stand out, as it was essentially a fairy tale with expected fairy tale simplicity and sensibilities. Which, again, is not a bad thing in its own right, but it was a bit too simplistic for my tastes. And the gaming public said what? Best story in an RPG ever. No needlessly convoluted plot twists. What the hell does "needlessly convoluted" even mean?

Not saying they aren't there In fact, most games I play do that. But the general consensus seems to be "video games are like porn - we expect the plot to be there, but it's just there to give you context because nobody comes into them expecting great stories"

Oh okay, that makes sense. Well you're usually pretty good about it so I wouldn't worry too much. Your fans will wait, I'm sure ;D

How's that? You seem to be keeping up with them pretty well!

Well I'm really liking If My Heart Had Wings so far. I'm still only on the first route though so that could change.

Yeah, I think so too. It's just that I thought maybe one of my stories could work as they are now. But looking closer at it, I'd say they all need rewrites.

That said, I could expand Bauer Island to novel-length and just submit chapter one as my entry (they get the rest of the manuscripts later), but the problem is, the premise itself isn't too original, and originality is one of the criteria they're looking for. Granted, I have 1-3 pages to write a description, so I could emphasize what makes it different, why Ram is an atypical detective, etc., but I'm still kinda worried it won't work, and forking over $40 at this exact moment over what is effectively a gamble is kind of too risky.

Still, I'm glad I know this exists. I may try next year.

Ah, remember A Rough Week? The one with the vampires. That story was also kinda open-ended and could work as like the pilot of a TV show. That is, I would have to explain the entire premise in the notes I attach to them . And I'd probably need a rewrite too, because I wrote it so long ago... Oy vey. This is way too late/

Dies Irae Review

by Karifean on 08-03-2017 at 12:32 AM
Dies irae ~Amantes amentes~ is a visual novel created by Light. It was one of the most renowned JP-only VNs before finally getting a localization in June of this year.

Come, gather and bear witness to my opera, now in the making.

Its script is the height of cliché, I am forced to admit. And yet...

Its actors are of the finest fold; beyond exquisite.

Thus, I believe you will find it enthralling.

Umineko: Episode 4 Tea Party

by Karifean on 07-09-2017 at 08:57 PM
You talk too much. All you have to do is honestly say 'I'll kill you'.

For those that don't know, the climaxes of Episodes 4, 5 and 6 are my 3 favorite moments in Umineko (which also makes them my 3 favorite moments in fiction overall), all for their own individual reasons. I've been dying to talk about them for a while. I figured I'd start with the Episode 4 Tea Party, quite possibly the greatest example of Ryukishi's writing skill of them all.

SubaHibi set for late August release

by Karifean on 07-04-2017 at 01:03 PM

So this probably won't be relevant for most people here since non-PG and all, but SubaHibi, one of the most hyped visual novels in recent memory, is set to be released in English in late August.

The method of release is kind of strange, ngl. Apparently they offer the first chapter of the game in all ages on Steam for 30 bucks and then provide

As of just now, Little Busters! English Edition is on Steam Greenlight. While the release date is a vague "2017" it's pretty cool to see *something* happening nonetheless.

Higurashi Ch. 5 Meakashi released on Steam

by Karifean on 04-29-2017 at 12:36 AM
So for anyone following this series, or interested in following it, Higurashi Chapter 5 - also known as Meakashi - was just released on Steam. I felt like announcing this here because it's my favorite arc in Higurashi and one where I feel Ryukishi's talent in writing characters really comes out for the very first time.

You can find it here:
