Alrighty!~ Finished game, writing up review

So is that blowing mechanic present in the other games?

Ooh, I also love it because I look up to Arakawa as an artist, not just a storyteller. Her styles amazing - it's so simple and yet, despite that, every single character looks distinct. Not to mention very varied body shapes, both in men and women, and I like how she draws both big breasts and big muscles in a completely non-sexualized way (except when it's supposed to be sexual, like Lust ).

Haha, see? It's funny how we can have discussions and agree on many aspects of storytelling, but when it comes down to it, I love FMA, you love FFX, despite the other not enjoying it. It's beautiful

Something can be well written but still present a viewpoint you completely disagree with, which can seriously ruin your enjoyment, no matter how well-written.

Melodrama is probably the thing, yeah I still think melodrama can be done well, but I honestly think Toriyama seriously just has no idea how real human emotions and relationships work

And tropes are tools. I've never been in the camp that diss something because it's "tropey" (however infantile that notion is). You seriously cannot write anything that would be void of any tropes whatsoever. The key is utilizing the tropes skillfully, and I don't mean just by deconstruction or subversion. A good, rounded selection of tropes can make a fantastic character, even if they're all played straight. You just have to think. What I don't like is blind use of easy archetypes and stereotypes, hoping that will make your viewers relate to the characters quicker. that's just being a hack, not a writer.

On that note, I just finished FMA Brotherhood, and wow, was I blown away. This is a perfect example of a show that really doesn't do anything groundbreaking on paper, but it has an interesting premise, phenomenal characters and a plot that perhaps isn't jaw-dropping on its own, but is built-up pretty much flawlessly.

Well, it does kind of make sense. You really only spend time dwelling on and analyzing works that you find enjoyable because you are intrinsically motivated to do so. You don't really have that drive when you don't enjoy something. And you can't really spot subtleties before you dig deeper into something. Then again, it is possible to spot subtleties along the way, even if by the end of the work you are dissatisfied with it. But still, you at least need to be involved during the whole thing.

Ah, sorry, misread that a bit I'll come back with a better answer in a second

I'm not sure. If you're referring to FFX, sure, i can see the subtleties. The issue I have is that I think they're not handled very well. And this is all very subjective, and I understand that. Toriyama just has this certain thing I dislike in his works.

Interesting Routes: Aqua

by Karifean on 11-30-2017 at 09:21 PM
There's something truly magical about Himawari that I didn't really realize back when I first read it but have come to appreciate about it more and more.

Himawari has an enforced reading order, something you don't see a lot in galge without a strong plot focus. However, like other visual novels such as Fate/Stay Night can use it to drive the plot and themes forward in parallel tales, so too does Himawari use it to give us ample

Well, at last, it happened. It's been a long time coming, Umineko Chiru is finally available for purchase on Steam, and alternatively MangaGamer's own website.

Umineko Chiru - Steam Store Page

This is the second half of Umineko of course, so if you haven't read the first half yet, you can get it here.

I've stated how much Umineko means to me many a time before,

The game is 20% off during its launch week, putting it at a respectable price of around half that of CLANNAD's, even though the two are quite similar in terms of sheer content value (though Little Busters contains

Dies Irae Review

by Karifean on 08-03-2017 at 12:32 AM
Dies irae ~Amantes amentes~ is a visual novel created by Light. It was one of the most renowned JP-only VNs before finally getting a localization in June of this year.

Come, gather and bear witness to my opera, now in the making.

Its script is the height of cliché, I am forced to admit. And yet...

Its actors are of the finest fold; beyond exquisite.

Thus, I believe you will find it enthralling.

Umineko: Episode 4 Tea Party

by Karifean on 07-09-2017 at 08:57 PM
You talk too much. All you have to do is honestly say 'I'll kill you'.

For those that don't know, the climaxes of Episodes 4, 5 and 6 are my 3 favorite moments in Umineko (which also makes them my 3 favorite moments in fiction overall), all for their own individual reasons. I've been dying to talk about them for a while. I figured I'd start with the Episode 4 Tea Party, quite possibly the greatest example of Ryukishi's writing skill of them all.
