Yeah, I saw that article some time in the past. It's too bad, because she is popular among young girls.

The old Starfire was a lot like 7 of 9 from Star Trek (or since she came along first 7 of 9 is like her). Very curvy, oblivious to societal norms are the taboos associated with how she dealt with sexuality, and her personality also reflected that. She was both innocent and naive about certain things, while obviously very wise and noble in other ways. Her outfit was certainly revealing, but was better explained as her culture simply being more comfortable with their bodies and not sharing the same taboos ore modesty. Obviously that's still a convenient character trait so that you can have a curvy girl who wears tight clothing, but her personality seemed to actually match the look.

Then the animated series came along and a lot the Teen Titans personalities changed, along with their looks. Obviously the show was a pretty big hit for a lot of kids, and it was the first introduction to the Teen Titans, so these new looks and personalities were the Teen Titans as far as the kids were concerned.

So I find it interesting that the mom in that article noted that her daughter still really liked Starfire from the old comics as well as the TV show. I mean here you can see her outfit actually more closely resembles the new outfit in the new comics and graphic novels compared to the one from the tv show. You can also see how a few other characters, like Cyborg, also put on more clothes. In a way, it struck a fine balance between teaching kids not to be ashamed of their bodies or their sexuality while also learning it didn't have to define them.

It seems to me what the girl was picking up on was the nature of the character in relation to her "new" (rebooted) look when combined with her new personality. I've gathered that they've replaced Starfires iconic kindness, nativity, nobility, and innate desire to help with a character who just more of a jerk. She's more cold, treats her sexuality in a different manner, and just isn't Starfire. (Remember this is just what I've heard second hand from fans.) So while the outfit and the noticeable boob job are distressing, I think the biggest crime is making young women once again think the only two options are complete modesty or manipulative sexuality.

Where's the "free with your body/not ashamed, but it's also not automatically about sexuality" option?

Well, there you go. Very cool. I don't think I'd heard of that phenomenon before.

Still, I figured Ryoudo and Millenia would be at the bottom. It's nice when characters you don't expect turn out to be better than you expected.
