  3. And it would be the most beautiful bastard of all time.

You know, it's funny you said that, though. I went to my normal Indian joint last week, and the guy who I'm friends with was like, astounded I said my curry wasn't spicy enough. And he's just like, "It's super super spicy, just like you asked! YOU JUST WAIT TILL NEXT TIME!"

I'm pretty sick atm, actually. But other than that, I'm decent. Just same old, same old. School and work. Getting ready to move!

I find it hard to believe that there is such a strict dichotomy between clinical and situational depression. Can you give me an example of someone who is depressed simply because something is 'wrong with their brain'?

I think, nowadays at least, 'mental illness' is far more glamorized than it is stigmatized. I think it's important to realize, though, that mental illness is ill defined and so it is hard to have a meaningful discussion about it.

As for depression, I think there are plenty of valid reasons to be depressed. Any time I have dealt with depression it has made a lot of sense. I have always wanted self respect, but I have seldom had it because I have never done anything that I actually have respect for. It's completely reasonable to be depressed when you haven't accomplished anything admirable by your own standards. Calling this an illness and trying to treat it with drugs is patronizing, unhelpful and completely missing the point.

I don't think I am alone in feeling this way. A lot of people are depressed because they have no good reason not to be. I think, when you are in this situation, 'treatment' look appealing because it takes the responsibility for happiness away from the individual.

I don't work in the healthcare field, although my mom does. She has worked both as a 'traditional' nurse and in behavioral health and she's kind of a homeopathic nutjob. I've been surprised at the amount of healthcare professionals I've met who are open to 'homeopathy' (a stupid term for a stupid debate; I think it was Raistlin who told me the joke "What do you call alternative medicine that actually works? Medicine."), given how frequently the concept is ridiculed on all the pseudo intellectual message boards I visit on the internet.

I'm not sure what my stance is on taking psychotropic drugs, given how addicted I am to weed. I'm in no position to criticize someone for resorting to drugs for any reason. I don't think it should take a healthcare professional to realize that synthetic drugs aren't a magic pill, especially in 'behavioral health', though. I do think it's fair to say that, possibly even more often than not, drugs of all types are used as an 'easy way out' because most people aren't willing to put actual effort into improving their condition. It's easier to just be dependent on drugs and 'professionals' than change your diet or behavior.

The stereotype of modern healthcare is that it ignores or encourages this problem. I don't have much experience as a healthcare patient myself, so I can say little.

Stepping out of my comfort zone

by Jinx on 05-05-2014 at 03:19 AM
Since quitting my job, I've spent much more time at home, and it's caused me to fall back into some of my old agoraphobic ways. I really don't like that I'm like this again, considering that I had done a complete 180.

Because of that--and also just wanting to make friends and get out and do things--I've joined some Meetup groups. I haven't gone to any events yet, but I'm going to one this Thursday. It's a tabletop game meetup. (If I enjoy it, I might start going to the Wednesday night

yeah this jam was the trout when i was six

I've been to the gym three times (hurt my neck and had to take today off ) but I've already noticed a change in my body. Rob and I have been eating much much healthier. I haven't had anything sugary to drink in over a week, and we've been eating a lot of lean meat and veggies. I've been lifting weights and walking--and even in three visits, I've noticed my endurance is much, much better.

I'm

1. Lose 30 pounds or more.
-To do this I am going to eat healthier (which really, anything is healthier than how I've been eating the past week!), and join a gym and exercise. I want to do cardio and strength training with weights. Any advice on exercise would be greatly appreciated!

2. Grow out my hair until it's completely natural.
-This one's pretty simple. Just don't dye my hair! I'll probably cut my hair from time-to-time. My hair is already about two or two-and-a-half
