It's listed under key items, with the description "a small gem encased in crystal". I can't equip it or anything. It must be just to show I beat him as you said. I think the only other key items are boss drops as well. Maybe they help to identify the bonuses you get when transferring over to the full game.

What does the automaton catalyst do? I got it from the last boss of the demo and thought "hmm what can I use this for". I typed it in google and didn't find anything.
