There's definitely some troutty loli fanservice stuff around (actually the majority is) but there are also some great stories. NGE is very good, and Hellsing is pretty neat.

27 episodes. It starts a bit slow, but gets better each episode. You are familiar with anime btw (or manga), have you ever watched anything else before?

It's basically a tale of courage thrown up in an exaggerating yet awesome hyperbole. It's considered one of the best anime ever, and well, let me tell you, it definitely is. (certainly on my top-3, along with Code Geass and Evangelion.) You MUST watch it, if you ever get the time, it's really brilliant.
