If we were native to Mars, I think we’d have a better name for the planet. But if we were immigrants, I’m pretty sure we’d still just call it “Mars,” or even “the planet.”

If we lived on Mars, would we say "The Mars?" Huh.

You drop the “the” and capitalize the E when you are on a larger scale, say, talking about all the planets from a completely objective standpoint. You definitely don’t capitalize the e when referring to a lump of earth that you could go outside and dig... I think (but am not too sure) that it’s fine to write “the Earth” if you are referring to the planet on its on. But still

I still don't really know when to use which. I have somewhat convinced myself it has to do with the word the.
