It was explained to us. It something to do with one people preferring butter on the top side and another people preferring butter on the under side of their toast... it was about the Cold War or something.

Why? Oh, I probably know why. Same reason I had to read the book when I was 7 years old. There was also another book by the same author, which had a much more grim meaning than the book’s illustrations suggested.
