Guns came from bow & arrow which came from spears which came from hand ax which came from throwing stones. We may have a few millions of years' head start, but they can hover.

But now we have advanced. We have better weapons than spears. They're primitive!

Hey hey hey now slow down. I don't know if it would go that far. I mean how advanced could they get. They could probably use their arms to hold little spears made from sticks, but they can't take over the world that way!

With arms free, it would be able to develop new means of self-defense and hunting. With these new abilities, its old and now inferior abilities would either evolve out or be “watered down” (so to speak) to serve a lesser purpose. Eventually it would take over humans.
