Why is Design in Furniture Important?
Design in furniture is important for four things; function, form, materials and manufacture. This all determines the price of making, and the target audience.
Function: The function of the furniture is important. For instance, a chair must comply with the basic rules of a chair. It must have sitting space, and most of the time it is supported by either four legs, or two interconnected legs. Though of course there are many other designs that still serve the basic function of seating.
Form: The form of the furniture is very important, also. This determines the overall target audience. E.g. while still obeying the basic rules of a chair, a chair can be in any way, shape or form. The more eccentric designs would suit the more eccentric person, and vice versa.
Materials: The materials a piece of furniture uses determines the price of making, the comfort, and that effects the function. Example - an office chair is built to be very comfortable; a worker will be sitting in it for up to 6 or more hours a day, with few breaks. With the comfort they will work harder. Whereas school chairs aren’t built to be comfortable; just functional. Children will be sitting in them for an hour or less.
