He is a genius. There is a crayon in his brain that cripples his genius. The crayon (smurf it) was inserted around 6 years old, which ties in with Abe’s ‘‘Simpson Gene,’’ which shows the Simpson males starting off as intelligent, but dumbing down over the years. Although this doesn’t explain Bart and Abe, there are several possibilities: that the gene skips a generation, and Homer never really had it (but it was mistaken that he did, which also explains why no action was taken to improve him); that Bart got his natural intelligence from his father, but also lacked an appropriate role model, and started to become lazy like his father; and that Bart is still smart, but has a much more developed taste for mischief and mayhem (this is also likely, as Lisa develops a similar problem for a short time).
