I think it’s because food is so scarce in Africa, that anything would do, and that includes things that happened to be floating in the air. Seeds, bird droppings, elephant snot... normal hair wouldn’t catch this, but nappy hair is particularly good at picking this stuff up. Then the hungry hungry african only needs to run fingures through its hair, and it has a tasty treat.
