So, I mean to buy a PS2 in the near future (yeah, I'm late :D), and being new to the MMORPG genre I have a question:
Do I need any particular "extra equipment" in order to actually play online?
Or does the game have this feature already?

Yes, you need HDD(Hard drive) for PS2 and network adaptor. You might also want to get the expansion packs, but they are not necessary. They are very expensive for the PS2 though(about $30 each). I think you might be better off getting it for the PC. Or if you don't want it for the PC this is the next best choice. But you'll probably have to spend more than 60 bucks for this.
You CAN NOT play this on the new slim PS2s. You can't attach the HDD to it (normally). If at all possible play it on PC. It will be far less expensive and has a lot of other benefits.
The game was never released for PS2 in Europe either.
Yeah, providing your PC can take it, go for it.
8 GB of free disk space needed.
I wonder if it would play on my PS3
I think they're working on making that possible.
People have reported that they've gotten FFXI to run on PS3. But there's no current support for it.
PC's better for MMO's anyways, imo. =\
Meh, I think PC is better for pretty much everything, providing you can upgrade the hardware often enough to run games at top notch quality. Consoles are cheaper in the sense that all games are writen specifically for the hardware provided, thus loosing less firepower on multicompatibility.
Oh, I forgot. There's another important thing you need in order to play this game.
Patience.
The only things I'd play on PC are MMO's, Adventure (Myst series, Dreamfall, Grim Fandango, etc) RTS and FPS. Everything else I'd rather have on a console, simply because offline RPG's, action and platforming games are more comfortable playing on the couch / in-bed.
Not to mention that upgrading your computer all the time can get very costly, especially when you have other expenses and things you'd rather buy. =P
Edit: Yes, and absolute patience. And an understanding of how to not let this game rule your life.
Just make sure you manage play online, or It could continue to charge you for play even when you stop playing.....
And double check they are not charging you after you cancle the account.:mad2:

Besides the HDD question, everything else can be answered in that thread. You need to find an old school PS2 and a working HDD to get it kicking. PS2 players are a rare breed now a days when it breaks down they either switch to PC or buy an Xbox.
