Continued Musical Education

During the last week of school, my friend went around asking people what music he should get. I figured it was a pretty good idea. So, instead of turning to all my friends for what music I should listen to (I already did), I've come to all of you here at EoFF for suggestions.

Name some bands (or albums if you want to get specific). I'm open to anything excluding the following: country and metal of any sort. From what I've noticed around The Lounge, the latter will upset some people. Oh well. So yeah, throw some names at me.

I bolded my favourites from each band, though all of those albums are worth listening to, and so different from each other for each band that even if you didn't like one you may like the others.

King Crimson - I know it was said, but it needs to be said again. :p No band is better than King Crimson. They constantly reinvent themselves. In The Court Of The Crimson King would be their best release, highly influential prog rock. Lizard is another classic of their's, a jazzier album though. Discipline is a great album too, and so is Red And Larks' Tongues In Aspic (but they're more metal than you seem to be willing to try, sadly. :( ).

Yes - Symphonic Prog Rock - Best Albums: Close To The Edge, Relayer, Fragile, The Yes Album. The last two are more friendly for newcomers. :D

Porcupine Tree - Prog Rock - More just saying this again because I think Up The Downstair, The Sky Moves Sideways and Stupid Dream are all better than In Absentia.

Built To Spill - Alternative/Indie Rock - If you like Modest Mouse you'll like BTS.

Pixies - Alternative Rock - Same as Built To Spill. Get Doolittle, it's ace.

Dinosaur Jr. - Alternative Rock - A grungy, noise-rocky alt band. Do yourself a favour and pick up You're Living All Over Me.

Emerson, Lake And Palmer - Symphonic Prog Rock - Very classically inspired prog rock. The First prog rock supergroup with Keith Emerson (from The Nice), Greg Lake (King Crimson), and Carl Palmer (Atomic Rooster). Get their self-titled, Pictures At An Exhibition, and Brain Salad Surgery.

Cake - Alternative Rock - Slow, sarcastic and cynical. Cake is a very original band and I reccomend them. Fashion Nuggest is their best work.

Camel - Progressive Rock - Wonderful, enjoyable, and mostly instrumental prog rock. Get Mirage, Moonmadness, and my personal favourite: The Snow Goose, which is an amazing album.

Cream - Psychedelic Rock - Great sixties band, Eric Clapton is in here of course. Also if you like Bonham's work in Led Zeppelin (drummer), you'll like Cream, because Ginger Baker does similar stuff (and was doing it before Bonham, actually). Disraeli Gears and Wheels Of Fire are musts.

Rush - Progressive Rock - Hard rocking prog, a Cream/Led Zeppelin influence can be pretty apparent. One of the best power trios to ever exist, each one is a musical god. Pick up all five of their classic albums: 2112, A Farewell To Kings, Hemispheres, Permanent Waves, and Moving Pictures.

Deep Purple - Hard Rock - This should be obvious. Can be proggy at times (Child In Time). Get Deep Purple In Rock and Machine Head. :p

Caravan - Prog Rock - Cantebury prog, pretty jazzy. If I Could Do It All Over Again, I'd Do It All Over You (thats one album) and In the Land of Grey and Pink are must-haves.

Brain Eno - Art Rock/Ambient - The Father Of Ambient and legendary producer for bands like U2 and Talking Heads. Ambient 1/Music For Airports and Another Green World are mastpieces.

Genesis - Progressive Rock - Classic prog. Only trying to center on the 70's-Genesis with Peter Gabriel and Steve Hackett, due to the fact the Phil Collins-led 80's Genesis was terrible. Get Foxtrot, The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway, Selling England By The Pound, and Nursery Cryme.

Hella - Math Rock - Spastic, speedy math rock group. Originally a duo, these guys are true geniuses and have one of the best drummers I've ever seen, Zach Hill. Go out and get Hold Your Horse Is now.

Jethro Tull - Progressive - There are few bands that have ever made the flute work in rock, and one is Jethro Tull. Kind of folky, kind of bluesy. Very worth a listen. Thick As A Brick is an instant classic. Though Aqualung is probably more friendly for beginners.

Joy Division - Post-Punk - Best post-punk band around, Closer is truly amazing and needs to be heard by everyone.

Kraftwerk - Krautrock - Electronic prog, kind of bordering on ambient. Truly groundbreaking music. Pick up Man Machine, Trans Europa Express, Computerwelt, and Autobahn.

The Mars Volta - Progressive Rock - Frances The Mute > Deloused In The Comatorium.

My Bloody Valentine - Shoegaze - Shoegazing pioneers, Loveless is a like a pleasant dream.

Neutral Milk Hotel - Indie Rock - Indie masters. In The Aeroplane Over The Sea is one of the best albums of the nineties. You owe it to yourself to listen to it.

Pavement - Indie Rock - More amazingly wonderfuly indie rock. Wowee Zowee is a must.

Slint - Post-Rock - Spiderland was probably the first post-rock album ever released, and it remains one of the best.

The Smiths - Indie Rock - 80's Indie classic. Morrissey is a genius, and if you like the new Modest Mouse album, the fact The Smiths' guitarist Johnny Marr is here. The Queen Is Dead is the way to go.

Supertramp - Progressive Rock - A poppier prog rock band. Addictive and highly worth your time. Crime Of The Century and Breakfast In America are the best they have to offer.

Tangerine Dream - Krautrock/Ambient - Electronic and haunting. Truly immersive, TD knows how to create atmosphere. Phaedra and Rubycon are their bests.

Soundgarden - Grunge - Former band of Audioslave's vocalist. beats out Audioslave too, Superunknown is one of the best grunge albums to date.

Ugly Casanova - Indie - Solo project of Modest Mouse frontman Isaac Brock, if you like Modest Mouse, you'll like Ugly Casanova.

The Velvet Underground - Garage Rock - Their debut has to be one of the best albums ever to surface.

Wishbone Ash - Blues Rock/Progressive Rock - Best Albums: Wishbone Ash and Argus

Wolf Parade - Indie Rock - Has made only one album, produced by Isaac Brock, so it has a Modest Mouse feel to it I think you'll enjoy.

Yawning Man - Stoner/Space Rock - Instrumental and relaxing.

Frank Zappa - Progressive Rock/Experimental/Jazz/Avant-garde/...lots - An odd man, but a musical genius. Start with the wrong album though and you might get too weirded out. Apostrophe, Over-Nite Sensation, and One Size Fits All might be best.

My mistake then.

However, I do think Stupid Dream is better than In Absentia, and is accessible enough to reccomend to a newcomer. Thats just the way I see it though.

Try Radiohead, Sublime, Soundgarden, The Smiths, Mars Volta, Alice in Chains, Live, Days of the New, Something for Kate, Dave Matthews Band.

This is where I'd mostly promote Jeff Buckley, but he's already on your list.

Try listening to some Great Big Sea. They are a group from the Canadian province of Newfoundland. Since that province is a mix of Irish, Scottish, and English settelers, the music itself is a mix, and GBS takes that unique mix and mixes with contemporary pop and rock to make a very cool and fun style of music. Problem is every time you listen to mainstream style tracks like When I am King or Ordinary day, that suckers you into listening one of the more harder core Newfoundland tunes like Mari Mac, which can melt your brain if your unprepared for how... different, it sounds.

If you like The Postal Service, you might like Death Cab for Cutie... they both have Benjamin Gibbard at least. ;)

Oh, and you might like Brand New too...

Manic Street Preachers are definitely one to look up.

If you're into Paul Van Dyk then look up Sasha and John Digweed.

And - if you're feeling particularly adventurous - Sean Callery.
