Test Subject?

Got into this discussion at work, and it kind of makes sense.
Would you consider the Wii a test console?
New console idea, maybe Nintendo was testing to see how well such a system would rank in the sales of the next gen gaming platforms, thus not changing the graphics to significantly.
I think, that they could be planning something crazy, graphics wise, in the close future, with the infrared technology that the Wii currently employs.
What do you think?
