So do you get sort of ticked off when others claim that they saw something... that fell in masses (meteor shower a few years ago)?

Yeah, they noly do it to get attention.

Not really. They're just expressing the fact that they saw something cool.
In the event that they're saying it just to sound cool or whatever, I'll just ignore them or poke fun at them.
