Dissociation of Math Researchers From Laymen

I attended a public talk by one Dr. Michael L. on the Mathematics of Futurama. I realize that it was intended to be light-hearted and humorous, but I realized early on the feature of the presentation was to be an outline of each math joke inserted in the show, a break-down of the history of the mathematical term, and a dry explanation of why this is funny.
I learned several interesting tidbits, but the lecture itself failed at being public entertainment as far as I could tell. I was sitting next to one of Hsu's professors, and for all I know, he might have found it hilarious and enthralling the entire time.
What I need to know is: math students, would this treatment of humorous material entertain or amuse you?
