smiley or emoticon? which is which?

Emoticon is the word I change to after I type out 'smilie' and think it doesnt look like it's spelt right and I cant be bothered to look it up.

Both mean the same thing asl? yes? but asian. Yay ^_^ it's ok cuz like

Lol, it's just that I've always called colourful and/or moving smilies emoticons, but I call those of punctuation marks like : ) or : '(, smilies. xD

I thought both were both.

I agree with Clo's thought. Either/or.

I guess the deciding factor in my mind is "can something that is not an image necessarily be an 'icon?"

but I always get it backwards and call graphical smileys and text emoticons anyway. lol!

both are both BUT smiley's only refer to the ones with smiles eg. : ) or :), :D or : D however emoticons refer to any emotion

I like the smiley the best. Emoticons are creepy.

Emoticon and smiley are interchangeable to me if you're talking about graphical and/or text versions. Emoticon is the proper term, though.

A smiley is technically just :), but can refer to any emoticons as well.

Emoticons are simply pictured icons of text based 'smilies' Simple as that

If it's so simple then what is ^_^ ? or ^_^^_^_^ or even ^____________________________^ ?
